Oh yeah it's frankly worse than the slums of Medellin in those 141 walkups. Once, a gang of triads came at me, said they were the Fukienese Dragon Gang and I had insulted...well, not them exactly, but they had a list. The gang-leader, a terrifying guy with metal teeth, unrolled an ancient scroll and read off my list of transgressions:
• Insulting the Fukienese ancestors by not burning incense.
• Ignoring the canteen at the Fukienese temple.
• Being a gwailo.
I was terrified, as you can imagine, with these dreadful gangsters holding me captive (note that while I'm skilled in Berserk Piglet-style kung fu, that's no match for the Bodacious Badger martial arts discipline these brigands practice).
Fortunately, the alpha gangster, seeing my abject terror, took pity on me and said I could expunge my sins if went to said canteen at the temple and ordered the daily special. He even gave me a discount coupon.
Thus my worthless gwailo ass was spared a gruesome death. And the daily special (instant noodle soup with a semi-circular slice of greasy luncheon meat) wasn't bad. And, well it was a bit expensive even with the discount coupon so I guess I was robbed, kinda.
Yeah, you take your life in your hands. A Maglite will not help if these sadistic fiends descend upon you!
