RA Ettiquette Discussion

Hey I figured if no one else is doing it I may as well start a thread to discuss RA Ettiquette. This mostly applies to all of US (Not limited to AR migrants), as laws are different in Canada and HK and WGs and mongers operate on different level of risk.

First of all, just to get everyone on the same page please refer to the RA/karma accessibility chart, which came from this post:

        Karma                          Reading Access                           Rank

Please note that RA 1 is effectively the same have RA 0; literally anyone even those with negative Karma may read it. There's been several posts set to RA1 which doesn't actually do anything.

Many posts are set to RA 10 which for all intents and purposes, also doesn't do anything, because any brand new account can access these. What it does do is prevent spammers, trolls, or identified trouble makers who got downvoted to negative karma from participating.

I think RA1/10 is fine for general discussions, news clips, etc.

Any report that involves information that's best not be made available to public should be at least RA20. This isn't to shut out lurkers and leechers, but instead a good general practice to minimize risks for those involved so not just any non-monger (cough)LE(cough) can access it.

Any report that involves particularly privileged information such as orgs that are so exclusive no one even knows how to contact them, as was a case in a recent newbie report, probably should be at least RA 40 by this site's standards, as Lustful Lord is the rank required to access the Restricted Access Reports section.

Thanks for publishing the chart. It is useful for the many new users on this forum like myself.  The subject title initially made me think this post was about etiquette with providers but it is important for us newbies to understand 141 etiquette as well.  My understanding is that subjects like this are better for the Mongering Talk section but I think it reaches more of the intended audience in this forum.  Bay area content seems to be overwhelming the Newbie Reports and North America forums these days but I am not sure what to do about that anymore since the area is a mongering hot spot.

I have used Read Access 1 as a way to make posts accessible to all users but not to random googlers who have no account on 141.  I would appreciate if anyone could provide clarity on whether it actually accomplishes that.

Regarding RA1, sexyloser is right in that it (with regards to normal viewing: access this site and clicking on the thread) doesn't do too much and is essentially 0.
I can view RA1 posts without having to log in.

Now, does that prevent things like Google's webcrawlers/spiders from being able to access it?
I'm not sure honestly. But a quick Google search did not result in me finding the RA1 post you had made, so maybe?

Now, with regards to anonymity, I also agree that post with more detailed information should be less accessible.

Brand new accounts are given RA10 right off the bat.
So anyone with an account (who hasn't been penalized) or anyone who wants to make a new account, can assess those threads without too much restriction.
And while nice to be able to just jump onto the site and quickly glance at a few threads without logging in, RA10 really should be used more since the restriction it applies is really the bare minimum.

When making my 1st review, I debated on whether or not to make it RA20, since I was also debating on how detailed should the post be.
I do agree with the opinion that more detailed threads should be harder to access, for provider safety.

The problem is, the jump from RA10 to RA20 is quite large, and not something I even have.
I actually had a chuckle thinking whether or not I'd even be able to read/access my own threads.

I think something like RA 15 would strike a good balance.
Unless you make an absolute banger of a post, getting to RA 20 takes quite a bit of time...
Something like an RA 15 would make it so you can't just make a new account to access sensitive information, but you'd really only have to contribute a couple times to see less detailed sensitive threads.

Honestly we do have recommendation on the RA level for photos but in the end that is just a recommendation. This is your report where you gain nothing but respect from your fellow buddies online for sharing your information. YOU get to decide what RA level your report will be. If you want to make your report RA level 100 than it is your right to do that. I do think that the RA level restriction is pretty low but if that the level that poster is comfortable with than it his right to do it. Unlike other forum this place do give lot of freedom to do what you want as long as you are being respectful.

I agree with JKfoodftw.  It doesn’t appear to be very difficult to get to the 120 mark to make RA20.  I currently don’t have it yet but I’ll likely post some reviews in the new few days and it probably will be no problem after that.  So I would say that as long as you are active and do a few review posts it should be fine.

On top of RA ratings, i believe we need to start being more discreet with the subject titles especially for storefronts, either using acronyms in the beginning or just putting the providers name. By not having RA10 and above for storefronts we are publicly giving LE the evidence to bust them. To maintain our hobby in the Bay, I think it will be a beneficial step of precaution.

Happy to see this conversation.

And the sensitivity to this topic. Busts are becoming increasingly common and our folks are ranking upward with excellent reports. We _must_ use peer pressure to educate folks who are putting sensitive details to put RA10 or RA20 on the reports.

Even after the 360 minutes pass, you can report your own thread to the mod and request them to put a certain RA level and they will do it for you.

Your indiscretion could provide intel to put the provider and another monger in hot water. I confess to have put RA level on some of my conversations later with the mods' help. It is good to observe others and learn.

We have to self moderate. Remember, rAMPage threw us all out for a few being indiscreet and over sharing. We may disagree with his methods to exile everybody. But his motives were the same as the author of this thread.

I am okay with the name of the establishment in the subject as long as the RA level is sufficient that a casual or curious person is unable to read the report by merely signing up. I think the minimum level (self imposed) of RA20 is ideal (a nod to a fellow senior member here who basically said the same thing aka jkfoodftw).

Good suggestions all around. I had already asked a mod to put RA10 on a thread in the Newbie section, so good to know that the mods are willing to change it after the fact.  I will put a higher RA on all future posts.

If youre not at RA20 but label your post as 20 can you still access it? I get that it may take some time for me to get to 20 but its a bit weird posting something you won't be able to access. I'm still happy to follow whatever is the forum etiquette.

I would say that do not get hung up on the exact level. Start with your own reading level (ra10) if you are below ra20. It is better than everything being indexed on google (the situation today).

Every solution will put someone at a disadvantage so we don’t have to be perfect. But the situation today is not sustainable.

Just look over at usasg. They are publishing reams of data . Who knows whom all are reading?

One extra point about RA40:
Restricted Access section is MORE than RA40 as those below RA40....CANNOT see the Title, therefore minimizing potential frustrations.

In HK, WGs have different status from 141 Walk-Up (legit) to DH or ladies under tourist visas or masseuses (licensed shop with fixed public address)...so RA on Reports have to factor that
to avoid painting a target on their backs.

With Pictures / GIF / VID, as @Jade_Moon put it, the author has flexibility.

For instance, if some Pictures have to be RA50 (guidelines), should:
a) Only the PIC be RA50 attached in a RA0 or RA20 post
OR
b) The Report be RA50?
That is up to the author to think about it.

RA can also be used in Mongering Talk or Lounge.
