I've never considered the $ aspect of it; but I can see how it would be very erotic to share your SO with another couple. If it's OK with both members, I don't see what's the big deal; and in fact, it's quite common, tho not nearly as common as cheating. So why not both fool around so that there's no cheating or dishonesty involved? And if it's together with another couple or group, all the better! I've had a lot of relationships that probably would have lasted a lot longer if we'd both been screwing other people.

When talking about behavior, it's very easy to mistake one's personal likes and dislikes for what is or isn't common or normal, and I'm no doubt guilty of that as well. Interesting thought.  Most would likely argue that sexual jealousy is an instinct more than a learned behavior, something that is very territorial and has its roots in infancy.  Kids seem to have a natural tendency to want to possess or control access to their parents, as a competitive, advantageous thing.  Certainly avoiding sharing a parental resource would aid in a child's likelihood of survival.  That same possessivenessgrows and expands in later life into something we direct at our partners.

Attachment based parenting would argue the opposite: that it's not instinct but insecurity learned at an early age, that drives this possessive streak.

Certainly any behavior learned at an early enough age is going to look like an instinct more than something learned later in life.

But it raises interesting issues if the issue was turned around - if our SO was asked to offer us for money to sleep with women..and how this fits in with the mere fact that we're all punters here saying we wouldn't do it - aren't we hypocritical in a sense that we want to protect our SO's but if we wanted to do all we can to protect them, then how comes we are doing something that can hurt them in serious way - emotionally, that is?
