Trading Account

Hi,

How hard is it to open a trading account in HK.... i mean trading account which i can buy and sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds? What are the requirements? does HK has firms that are equivalent to Etrade, Ameritrade (discount brokerages) in the US?

Thanks in advance!

Are your local banks or traders should be able to set something up for you in the US?  I know this is possilbe in Australia.  I use Comsec in Australia [discount broker] and I can open up overseas trading accounts.

Not so easy here if you are not a resident-the reputable ones want to see either a resident visa in your passport or a HK ID card.

Anyone can open a trading account in HK. Permanent residence is not required.

Usually, but it varies depending on which firm you do business with. However, depending on what financial instrument you wish to trade, there are minimum margin requirements - but that is true everywhere.

yes, i trade but has been slow the last 2 weeks..... portfolio got creamed pretty bad since lucy here did not listen by buying in financials.....and took a beating on NVDA suprised slashed sales forecast.

A lot of indices have been down lately .... and really it is so hard to invest this day.... the market can swing either way +/-points easy.

Try Interactive Brokers

U can register in with your local address - but the account then lets you trade in lots of different places incl US Europe HK Japan.  Last time I checked they were still adding Oz.

Their transaction rates are very low too ...

PS Philips Securities in HK have a HK-based software trading platform - more expensive than IB and only HK securities - but probably better if you're only looking to trade HK.
