Changing Old Foreign Currency

hey guyz,

So my mom pulls out some very old not in circulation bills from Singapore ($100 x 1 & $50 x1), Australia ($100 x 1 & $50 x1) and Japan (1000 yen x 5) and says she does not want them anymore.  Since I'm not interested in collecting currency, i took the bills to the bank for her to change them to HKD, but was told they can't change them because they are too old and not in circulation anymore.  The only way would be to go to the country of origin and get them changed to bills that are in circulation because they only do this for old HK currency here.
So, anybody out there interested in some old bills?
If they are worth more than face value I don't really care, I'd be happy to get my mom off my case on this just by converting them to HKD at face value.

Any taker or advice?!

Cheers

The Central Bank of the country of Origin cannot refuse their "old" currency.

Wrong

I had some Indonesian Rupiah with Suharto's  pic on it. the last date for exchanging it was 10 years after issuance of the new currency, i.e. 2009. So I am SOL with something like 2,000,000 of the stuff.

bummer

SURE they can refuse! If you don't believe me, I have a bunch of 100,000,000 Mark German Notes from the 1920s.  Do you think the German Central Bank will cash THEM?  LOL... nope.  They won't likely cash any West German Marks anymore either.
