Prepaid Voice Data in US

Need some help from our US-based bros.

I'm searching for a good prepaid plan that offers reasonable voice and data options with decent coverage across California (Utah and Arizona too, if possible). Mostly medium to light surfing, Facebooking, Whatsapp, Instagram + the occasional voice call. I estimate about 1 to 2 GB worth of data, 60 min voice call a month for a couple months. Hoping not to exceed US$50 per month.

Is the AT&T Go-Phone plans the better choice? T-Mobile seems to offer better flexibility but I understand it operates on a non-standard GSM that non-US phones may find it difficult to get on.

Any other suggestions and advice? Thanks!

I use an AT$T (&) gophone card and it works just fine however there is no data available on any of their pre pay options. Same with all the others except for T-Mobile.  My friend who is visiting from US says there is a new prepay from them that has data. I just looked it up.

$3 a day looks good: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.c ... ay-cell-phone-plans
This may be good if only for a couple weeks as $3/day = $90/mo

otherwise maybe this: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans

This may be what you are looking for.

T-mobile has a prepaid plan for $30/month.  It provides 100 voice minutes and unlimited messaging and unlimited data with the first 5 GB/month at full speed before throttling to 120 Kbps.  Unfortunately, this plan is saddled with restrictions. It's available only online or at Walmart stores and requires activating a new account with a new SIM.  If you have this plan and switch to another plan you can't switch back to it without activating a another new SIM! To get this plan you need to activate a T-Mobile Prepaid Activation kit (a SIM and an activation PIN) online at www.t-mobile.com/PrepaidActivation. You can buy the kit online at t-mobile.com, amazon.com or at a T-Mobile store (do not let the store activate it for you).

Roughly how much web surfing could one get on 5GB per month?  I realize that it is highly variable, but would that roughly be surfing for 3 hours/day?  6?

I'm looking for a data only service in the U.S., something to power an iPad when away from Wi-Fi

5 GB is about 170MB/day over 30 days.  170MB per day is like using a 56k dailup modem for 7 hours per day at max speed.  I used to use a 56k modem and I can tell you 7 hours of it at full speed is a lot of websites.  Most of the time, it is more than enough for reading articles and email.

So, 5GB per month is generous.

The deal is online only.  So, don't let them activate at the store.

Biggest issue with any of the US GSM carriers is the different in 3G/4G bands from like HOng kong and Europe.  The fastest speeds you'll get are edge.   And like Dii said the T-mobile plan is probably the cheapest pre paid with data in the states.

i use at&t go phone.

I recc to pre-pay $100. Pay cash if your want total anonimity.  Its good for 12 months.  Less than $100 increment is good for 3 months i think

10 cents voice.
20 cents text
data is 1 cent 5kb....

i recc to go to local starbucks & use the free wifi.

as for the physical phone itself,  you can go with a $30 crappy phone or buy a used decent phone on ebay  with a sim card.  Keep the phone if for future reference as a small investment.  If you were here, i would give you a pile of my older phones to use
