Bank account for non-resident HK

I'm thinking about setting up a Bank Account in HK.

I'm not a HK citizen or resident.

Anyone done this?

What's the procedure and best bank for expats?

HK address not necessary.

just need passport
and proof-of-address of the country of the passport you are holding.
e.g Bank statement.

But the problem is , they will send you ATM card PIN to your home country address.
you are required to sign and mail back to the bank, before they activate your account.
so need to go back and open your mailbox.

It's a pretty common practice, I mean HK is a major offshore banking center.

I have an account with HSBC and I am not a resident of HK. You need to present your passport and drivers license for proof of address. Go to their customer service desk and they'll fix it for you. I got my ATM card on the spot and one of those security key chain things in the mail few weeks later. All statements are posted to my overseas address.

You might want to opt in on internet banking, nearly everything can be managed online when you're out of the country.

hsbc has a online banking account for US based & HK based. great for trips to hk

Since the OP is from the west, you can open Citibank or Chase bank which has branches in HK.

I've done it this way before and then immediately after changed my address to the one in HK, like immediately after, like one hour immediately.  It's kind of stupid but they don't need proof of address to change an address. It worked for me so maybe you can try

I just settled in HK a month ago, and opened Hang Seng bank account. You could show them a proof of your address in your native country and they would open an account for you. The only setback is they would mail everything to that address until you can change it. Your personal checks and bank statement would be sent over there. It is quite stupid.  The ATM card would be given to you immediately by the rep who opened it for you, and your PINs will be given to you right away. You could opt in for online statement so you can view them online instead of the bank sending to your address in your previous country.
