This event has received a lot of play in the media... with lots of pseudo intellectual neo-colonialist post-modern babble thrown in the mx:

I don't see the issue...  Don't bars all the time have Ladies' Nights where women get free drinks?  Why do the bars do that?  In order to balance supply and demand -- i.e., get enough women to offset the number of men who tend to frequent bars -- they make drinks free for women.  Having a dinner in which women pay and a sub-group of men do not is just the same principle.  

Is the problem that there are a group of Chinese women -- reportedly Mainlanders from the comments on dogthom's link (but that supposition may just be HK prejudice) -- who would be willing to pay big bucks to meet Western men over a relaxed dinner?  Does this demean Hong Kong women or Asians?  Not necessarily...  They are simply paying for access to a pool of (presumably) desirable men.  I would bet that many Chinese women would also be willing to ante up in order to have a dinner with rich, eligible, Chinese men.  So I don't see this as a racial issue.  It's a cash for access issue.  Is it any different from web sites and dating services in which men pay more in order to gain access to a pool of desirable women?

The dating world is just another marketplace.  It should be no surprise that the laws of supply and demand apply here just as theey do in other markets.
