IT question - Desktop Freeze

Hey guys, I am an IT idiot but my IT guy in office is more idiot than I am.

I can only send my Desktop for repair after this weekend, but tonight i need to access and extract something very important.

I have this problem, so IT expert out there, please advice.

This has started last night, I turn on my PC and the desktop has frozen, I can move the mouse but I cannot click the start menu or nothing, no icons nada. Cannot access to anything. Unable to shut down/restart in the proper way because I cant click anything that works. So, Make a force reboot, goes to the window. Same thing again , cant access anything. I click any icon, it  just freeze. Only the Mouse is working.
Try Keyboard, can type password onto the pop up MSN / QQ at start up. Click log in, Freeze!!
No beep sound from PC, despite pressing on the keyboard repeatedly.

The hard drive activity light shows blinking with normal HD activity, it's just slowly idling away like it would if the PC was working properly.

What;s wrong ? Virus? Old Desktop?

The answer I need, HOW TO FIX it?

Hmm...

Does is not ask to load it up in safe mode?

When you turn it off & back on it normally asks if you want to load it in safe mode.

One thing I would also like to know if where can you take laptops to be repaired?

I think pressing F1 as it loads might give you the option of going into safe mode...

Normally if you do not turn it off properly & then start it, it will automically ask to go into safe mode or start normally.

Sometimes one of my laptops does a similar thing, the tool bar will just vanish, no idea why. I can still work but it is a pain having to find things when the tool bar vanishes!

for me, just repairing windows works wonders for me when all else fails. just pop in the windows cd >> boot from cd >> install windows >> repair current version of windows.

takes a couple hours at most. no need to format hard drive.

Yes - agree!

Believe most of us are computer doofus-es to a certain extent or another as we really are not IT professionals after all. The problem is that computers these days are quite "user friendly" - so much so that too many of us try to DIY when encountering problems.

Well, to me its akin to getting sick and then trying to figure it all out myself by googling etc whilst I should just go on to see my doctor!

I try to remember this anytime I run into computer problems and would just pack it up and bring it to my favorite computer repair shop. Most computer shops are quite reasonable.

I gotta relay to y'all what had happened to me in the past though.

My Computer/printer connection was having a bit of a problem when a guy just happened to cold call/walked into my office asking if I needed any help/repairs to my computer, and quoted that his rate is only $50/hour.  So I figured - heck, why not - instead of wasting my time trying to DIY and let him at it. He fiddled with it and after a few minutes, declared that he needs to bring my computer back to his shop.

I thought - huh? But I had my laptop anyway so I thought, why not especially since he told me that he should be able to bring it back next day.  Next day came and nothing, and same the next day after that - so I had my office manger phone him and ask where my computer is.  Well, he then told my office manager that the computer is fixed and the repair cost was HK$4,000!!  WHAT??

So I told my office manager to go to this guy's shop to straighten it out - but his shop was actually just a HUGE warehouse type premises where he saw literally hundred of computers on the shelves, gathering dust.  What it is, is that this guy goes around conning unsuspecting computer doofuses like I to give up our computers and then hold it for ransom!!

My office manager even went to the police where he was told that this is a common con and that there's nothing they can do as the "receipt" they gave when taking away a computer is all legal and of course has specific provisions to accommodate their modus operandi i.e. mechanic's lien proviso etc.

They got me and so I was forced to just eat crow, negotiate the price down to $2,500 and got my computer back.

SEAN - so easy to con me!
