I'm based in Korea and most of the westerners here are English teachers. (I'm not a teacher).

But if you're close to a US military base (Osan, Gunsan, etc), most of the westerns will be DOD or soldiers.

Are most of the non-military westerners in Hong Kong ESL teachers like they are in Korea?

Do the ESL teachers get a bad rap in HK like they do in Korea?  They have a pretty bad stereotype up here.

Westerners are decently respected here. Most of the ones I know works in teaching, editors and modeling, personal trainers etc.

You can't really hate on a westerner, I saw a family with a 10-year-old kid eating 3+ mcdonald meals on the sidewalk today in the middle of mon kok and nobody gave them any grief. If you saw a family of mainlanders doing it, they'd be on the 11 o'clock news.

Please clarify your definition of Westerners...do you mean all Westerners (black, white, asian) or just those Westerners who are non-Asian?

All westerners, but I suppose I'd have that lean toward whites and blacks and not so much Asian (because Asians westerners are not really so "visible")

especially having witnessed raids on HK people eating on the MTR, it's galling to watch visitors get away with it especially if they then refuse to accept they're in the wrong

Hmmm maybe I didn't illustrate it properly to you guys.. They had fries spread all over the mcdonalds bags on the floor and were basically taking up a spot in the middle of MK with food on the floor instead of being on their laps. I mean it looked like their own home, and with the recent outrage towards Mainlanders causing unrest in HK society such as the newly elected CE or mainlanders mums illegally giving birth here and mainlanders taking a shit in public, any HKer will snap at the sight of Mainlanders doing anything out of line.

Yeah that's sort of what I'm getting, apologies for being ambiguous, I'm not in the best state in the mornings.

About the CE elections, CY and Henry Tang are both pawns from the PRC, I mean we all know that Beijing chooses the CE but the way they hold elections for the sake of democracy is meaningless when, at the end of the day, only 1,000ish voters, chosen by Beijing, are the ones who elects our CE. Oh, CY and Henry Tang are both as bad as they get. I don't need to tell you why Henry Tang is an embarrassment since every newslet in HK has done justice already, but CY is as clear as a mainlander dog as it gets. He literally didn't answer a journalist question when asked whether he will promote democracy in HK or not on live TV.

We all know it's hard being a CE in HK, since you have to please both Beijing and Hongkongers, but this election charade is ridiculous when the policies and laws they spew out are curved towards the advantage of mainlanders (and remember we still have decades of being 'independent' from China but the high speed rail trains you see connecting to China is another example of our incompetent CE). Another example would be... to allow mainlander babies born in HK to retain their HK identity card (and thus all rights + benefits), because "these children will be the blood of our future, they will be the ones to tie HK and China together", but a bigger question asks, which side will these babies take when they grow up, given that they're always taken back to Mainland after they're born to finish college then returning to HK, in order to "promote harmony between HK and Mainland".

Anyway there's a mountain load of more info why Mainlanders are disliked and I doubt you guys would be interested in reading my rants when I don't link sources, so.... I'll stop.

It's the same for Singapore, Hong Kong or any country that's flooded with PRC tourists.
People just cannot accept that how someone who "uncivilised" can have some much money to spend.
Head to toe in Chanel and Hermes, but squatting on the floor, spitting and shouting.

PRC people will forever be treated like cockroaches.
They are everywhere in the world.
But they will always survive and never die out.
It's an insult but also a compliment.

I cant stand them, but for the past 2 yrs, after spending half of my time in china, I get to understand more about their culture and life style.
IF you are shy and too humble, you cannot survive. People will bully you and take advantage of you.
If you dont shout, scream or curse, you cannot get your things done in china.

But too fucking bad, this 1% of the chinese ppl gives a bad name to the whole lot of China.
So, I stop judging the 1%, they are the exception (same like any countries, races), They do not represent the whole 100%.

Yes we're jealous of the corrupted governmental system they live in, where kids can get away from the law because their family is rich and in turn, they come to Hong Kong and Macau with their backwards and uncivilized cultures (and stacks of money) simply because they manage to leech off thousands of innocent and decent people in order to go on a spending spree here. Indeed we are jealous that we're not born in a family of unjustified elites.

Actually I don't really care, I hold a European passport with dual citizenship in HK because my ethnicity is Chinese but I just love ripping on my own race since I would be called a racist if I talked shit about black people or other races, yet my black friend born in London always talks shit about his own race like how they love chicken and watermelon so much, so I'm probably just frustrated with unfairness like a lot of others.

I do admire their courage and bravery for shitting in public, I mean sometimes I wish I could just push people away in a queue and not be afraid of how people think of me, in that respect, mainlanders can be admired for their culture.

But generally, they're annoying. Just had my cab queue jumped in CWB outside Sogo last week by this family who saw me waiting, but ran in front of me and stole the cab. We basically bitched at each other, me in English and them repeating "ask the cab driver ask the cab driver" in loop in Mandarin for a full minute and I swear the whole family was pretending to be illiterate. The cab driver said he saw the Mainlanders first (Duh, cos they ran in front of me) and people were looking at us bitching. I ended the convo yelling "Go back to mainland". I mean I was carrying a 15KG machine and sweating like hell for work and these assholes just.... ugh. Nevermind. Peace out

this used to be a HONG KONG thing as well - if anyone remembers HK in the 70s / 80s, you had a hard time to get a taxi in a crowded taxi-centric place.  

Blaming mainlanders for being rude and jumping queues is valid no doubt but HKers of the 80s were no better when snatching away taxis  and civic courtesies only improved as recently as the early 90s.

And oh yea... I will prefer a mainland chinese squawking aloud ANY DAY as compared to a Cantonese foul mouthed mini bus driver spewing DIU LI LO MO DIU LI LO MO .. HAM KAA CHHAAN PAA LAN SEI AAA etc etc   while driving his passengers. Nothing irritates me with a canto punk with his hair made up like some crappy japanese cartoon character with pants hung low down his crotch and belting out filial expletives

I agree that Cantonese swearing is pathetic and is much more annoying than Mainland swears, but you do realize most Chinese in Hong Kong back in the 60s and late 60s were refugees from Guangzhou and other parts in China? 70s 80s, I don't know much but it appears to me that Chinese back then were't really called Hongkongers, but simply called Chinese. Now we call ourselves Hongkongers instead of Chinese.

Then again, I'm not a Hongkonger, but my work requires me to be like one.

I remember once when my friend brought over his foreigner friend (canadian) over to China.  The guy's fully immersed in Chinese and Hong Kong culture and all.  But first question i stupidly ask the foreigner is "what do u do, do u teach?" hahahaa, yeah, ignorant me.
