Vacationing preferences: Warm sandy beaches or exploring a new country/place?

I have taken lots of vacations in my lifetime, but I prefer exploring over warm sandy beaches although I will take a Bahamas/Mexico/Jamaica once in a while if I find myself to be lazy at that moment.

It's funny that I would rather trek through a new city than just sit at an all inclusive resort.  The last place I explored is a little city called Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  It was about a 2.6 hour drive from NYC and I had a great time enjoying the sites, food, and overall feel of the city.  Greatest thing about having a GPS system in your car is never having to worry about getting lost in a new place.

My next stop will be ultra touristy but I believe very fun.  Hoping to get to Dubai come this Christmas with my family.  I heard it is less expensive than NYC and I am already looking for airfare and hotels.  Plus all these Hong Kong shows about visiting Dubai really has me wanting to try out the food already.

Sometimes, getting lost is the best thing that happen. Soon after moving to the middle east, I drove out into the desert and got completely
lost. I came across a camel race and a tribe of Bedouin living in tents. They invited me in, I ate with them, sitting on the floor and using hands
only. They dressed me up in bedoin clothes and sat me on camels. I took lots of photos. It was an amazing experience. I was there 2 years
and never saw another bedouin. And I never met another European who'd seen one. Now, I don't think they even exist. If I hadn't stupidly
driven off on my own, without a clue where I was going, it would never have happened.

Of course, I could also have died of thirst while lost in the desert.
