Character limit for acceptance/karma comments

I know that we are continually trying to encourage all members to use the "acceptance" rating to thank users for their posting or to write short comments.

I'm just wondering why there is an approx. 38 character limit for these? If we want to encourage members to make more and better use of this feature(and reduce the number of irrelevant one-liners we see particularly from the newbies) shouldn't we increase the character limit on this so that we can actually write MORE in this space?

It's sometimes a bit frustrating to try and use this feature only to find that the last bit of your comment is cut off making the sentence incomplete or difficult to read/understand.

Can anyone enlighten me on whether there is something that can be done here? Am genuinely curious.
On my monitor screen, there's plenty of additional room after the 38 characters that seemingly could be utilized.

This is a forum engine design limit and nothing can be done.

If I am using the rating system, I endeavour to write a comment to fit into the character limit. If not then just reply as a post.

We also encourage bros to use the forum search function as well to see if discussionsor questions that have been asked and answered before. Just like this one

If you check "Send PM to the Author",  the author will get everything that you type in the box in a PM.  So if it's more than 38 characters, only to the OP can see them.  Yes, this question has been asked and answered before.

Edit: change every to everything

Absolutely.

Smart way to use it is to begin with a short pithy comment, that fits on one line, for all to read ...

then fill it out with a more complete explanation for the OP, and check the "send PM to author" box.
