Competition to Apple's IPAD

Samsung to launch Galaxy tablet

Samsung is going to launch its Galaxy tablet in United States and Canada. It is compact and lighter than Apples' iPad and easy to use too. Paul Brannen, vice president, Samsung Mobile Canada announced plans to unravel the Samsung Galaxy Tab in Canada through the two wireless carriers, Rogers, and Bell.

In United States, the tablet will be coming to T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.

The device, with a 7 inch display, is thin and lightweight and offers premium content and productivity tools that makes it a mobile tablet that is very comfortable to use.

Features
The phone has 3G capabilities and uses Google’s Android 2.2 operating system. The superfast 1GHz processor allows simple multi-tasking.

The device also features built in Google services, like Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and the alike.

Unlike other Android tablets, Galaxy Tab is Google certified. This means that owners will have access to the ever-expanding Android market for games and applications.

The tablet has dual cameras, a front camera for video chatting and a rear 3-megapixel camera with autofocus for still photos or video recording. The tablet has the capacity of 7 hours of video playback.

A challenge to Apple’s iPad?
Till now the iPad has been the lone player in the market but that is going to change fast.

** NOT TRUE BECAUSE OF THE FAKE IPAD MADE IN CHINA ARE BEING SOLD FOR AROUND 580 RMB. ** Weelock

It is estimated that by the next year there will be perhaps 11 more manufacturers producing tablets.

Samsung claims that with its 7 inch screen and 380 grams weight, the tab is definitely more mobile and easy to use than iPad, which is heavier with its 9.7 inch screen.

A glimpse of Galaxy Tab
The size of the Galaxy tab strikes in first glance. It is considerably smaller than iPad and just a bit larger than Samsung’s smartphone.

Till now the iPad has been the lone player in the market but that is going to change fast. It is estimated that by the next year there will be perhaps 11 more manufacturers producing tablets.

The features, like 14 hours of battery backup and the built-in productivity services are aimed at business users.

The office applications, which offer everything from spreadsheets to presentations and documents, are sure to attract the consumers.

Growing use of tablets
Till now apple’s iPad is the only player in the tablet market. Soon other players will be entering the market. This is only going to intensify competition.

Samsung will definitely not be a late entrants in the market, which is very lucrative for tablets as they offer the convenience of mobility and portability, and are easy to use.

I saw them in Shenzhen and in Chang Ping 4 weeks ago.  In Shenzhen they were selling them for around $680RMB. The cheapest places were at two DVD/music stores in Chang Ping. One was selling them them for about 640RMB and the other 580RMB. These were the asking prices and I am sure it could be lower.  Both places even had fake looking Iphones 4.  If you are serious, PM I can give you a better directions for the place.

I was thinking about buy a few fake Ipad and iphone back to the USA for sale and for gifts for XMAS.

It's not the specifications nor the looks of the tablet that win consumers over ... its the amount of apps available and the TLC put into designing/producing it.  Apple has done both well - riding on its success of iPhone.  Android tabs need more apps to make em work ... and Windows   'enuff said!

P.S.  Have a look at the fake iPad/iPhone software before you buy... the few I saw were laggy and had half the instructions in broken english+chinese characters!

You are correct, someone was testing the fake Iphone and he had problems connecting to his QQ account.  It has two slots for two slim cards.  I don't believe you can get a data plan for web access. It only has wi-fi.

The fake Ipad seemed OK but I am NOT sure about other stuff like wi-fi access. I saw a youtube review of the fake Ipad. It was slower but cheaper compared to the real one.  You are also correct the documentation in English is extremely poor for the fake Ipad.  You are talking about 600-700USD to 100 USD difference for an ipad.

Yep, I've seen Samsung Galaxy Tablet specs ... pretty impressive as always.  Can't wait to try it in-store

iPad's specs are really nothing to shout about, its just that ... it works   Don't take my word for it - try it - either you become a believer or a hater

Pegatron lands Android tablet PC orders from HTC

Pegatron lands Android tablet PC orders from HTC

Taiwan-based notebook maker Pegatron Technology recently landed orders for High Tech Computer's (HTC's) Android tablet PCs which are expected to help the company achieve its goal of becoming the top-four notebook maker worldwide, according to sources from component makers. Pegatron has declined to comment.

HTC reportedly will launch a tablet PC using Nvidia's Tegra 2 platform and Google's Android operating system. The device will feature a multi-touch panel with a resolution of 1280×720, a 32GB solid state drive (SSD), 2GB of memory and several functions such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. With support from Nvidia's platform, the device's multimedia performance is expected to be stronger than that of iPad. The device will also feature software support such as Chrome Web apps and Android Market from Google.

Since HTC has advantages due to its relationship with telecom carriers worldwide, the market watchers believe HTC's new tablet PC should achieve better sales than other notebook brands, and the price of the tablet PC is estimated to be around NT$25,000 (US$789.75).

With the addition of HTC's tablet PC, Pegatron's capacity is expected to rise quickly and achieve the company's previous forecast of seeing a significant growth in utilization.

However, Apple is expected to put pressure to Pegatron by shifting its orders away as HTC is believed to be the strongest competitor of Apple's iPad, the sources noted.

I am not so sure that advantages such as better relationships with telecom carriers would be beneficial to sales of a tablet, i think a tablet is generally independent, as few people actually use a data package when using a ipad. people are more focused on using the ipad through wifi as to use an ipad people generally sit down and open it up.... further with the growing number of hotspots it would seem that wifi would be far more important than people purchasing data plans for a table pc. If people just wanted to check email and other things on the spot they would just use their mobile device.

How the enigmatic Jack Wong's like Apple to the core

In a trendy mall just west of Tiananmen Square, a cell phone shop with minimalistic decor displays the store's only product inside a clear geometric case on the centre of its floor.
Visitors are invited to sit on sculpted chairs along a broad, plain table or stand at a counter where they can scroll their fingers across the device's touch screen.
Although the products are offered in black or white, customers also can buy an attachable case in myriad colors and patterns called an iBack.
Thinking Apple Inc.? Not quite.
This is Meizu Technology Co., a young Chinese brand that could be one of dozens of companies making iPhone look-alikes in China.
But it has taken much more inspiration from Apple than simply the design of its popular mobile phone.
With its massively hyped announcements, leaked photos of prototypes and legions of fans both at home and abroad, Meizu has taken the unusual step for a Chinese manufacturer of imitating a foreign brand's marketing strategy.
The driving force behind this Chinese upstart is an enigmatic chief executive, Jack Wong, who is rarely seen in public but keeps a curiously strong fan base energised with occasional online chats.
"Jack Wong is a kind of Steve Jobs character - it's all a very carefully orchestrated PR campaign," said Chris Ziegler, mobile editor for taste-making tech blog Engadget, which covered the release of Meizu's first iPhone clone, the M8, last year.
"If you look at Meizu's forums, you notice this very strange cult of personality," Ziegler said.
"Every time (Wong) makes a comment on his company's online forums, there's this groundswell of pandemonium around those posts."
In early June, Wong uploaded and promptly deleted grainy pictures of a next-generation phone onto the official Meizu forum, setting tech bloggers' hearts aflutter with speculation on the upcoming product.
Regardless of whether Apple's own information leaks are intentional, the company has become synonymous with this method of building and sustaining hype, keeping consumers guessing what new features the latest models will offer.
Wong's calculated buzz-building hasn't necessarily resulted in huge sales in the world's largest cell phone market, estimated at 800 million users.
Meizu controls only 0.9 percent of China's fragmented sector for smart phones - high-end devices that can handle e-mail and Internet access. Still, that puts it only 0.1 percentage point behind Palm, a name-brand foreign competitor.
"If you look at (their phones) from a specifications-level perspective, they really aren't any different from your typical knock-off" iPhone, Ziegler said.
"But they are able to cast a sort of mystery over their products that is very intriguing."
It's probably why Meizu commands a dedicated following.
Meizume, an unofficial fan site, has 39,500 members spread across the globe, from the United States to Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia.
Carl Pei, founder of the Meizu fan site in Sweden, said many fans are drawn to Meizu as a rejection of what Pei calls Apple's "ecosystem": iTunes and the Apple applications store, which is the only legal way to buy programs for the iPhone or iPod Touch.
"Some people would like more freedom" from Apple, Pei said. "If you buy an iPod, for example, you (can only) use iTunes to add music to it."
Then, of course, there's the price. An iPhone 4 costs about $870 in China. The Meizu equivalent is a little more than $300.
"Cost is the most important thing," said Wang Dawei, a 23-year-old recent university graduate who was window shopping at the Meizu store in Beijing.
Wong founded Meizu in 2003 and released its first product, the M6 MP3 player, three years later. Although the device was conventionally regarded as a copy of the iPod Nano, it included innovative features such as a vertical touch strip in place of Apple's standard tracking wheel.
Meizu's first iPhone clone, the M8, came out in 2009 and generated unanticipated positive feedback. An Engadget review acknowledged the device's closeness to its inspiration but also called it "surprisingly good." Excitement is building online about the release of an M9 in the coming months.

A new report claims Apple is getting ready to unveil the second generation of the iPad in January 2011, outside of the normal yearly released schedule the company maintains for most of its products.
The report in the DigiTimes says manufacturers in Asia are preparing to ship the products over the rest of the year.

"Component suppliers including touch panel and reinforced glass suppliers for Apple's iPad are completing validation with Apple for the second-generation 9.7-inch iPad, according to Taiwan-based component suppliers," the report claims.

"Apple is expected to launch the second-generation iPad in the first-quarter of 2011, the suppliers noted."

I recall you said you might get an Iphone 4 for a backup. Any comments ?  Heard it was slow and sometimes freezes. A customer had a hard time connecting to QQ when I was visiting a store.  I was thinking about getting it too.

A friend of mine has purchased these iPhone clones before and they are very slow and cannot sync with an Apple computer. Best to get the real thing.

Would love to get the Android phone and Galaxy Pad but they're not compatible with the Mac either unless you get this expensive software from MarkSpace which is buggy at times.

BTW, Wheelock, never mentioned this but I really like your Avatar. It's Ginseng right? Makes you very virile.

Yes, Genseng is said to give you strength, energy, and a STRONGER SEX DRIVE.    It's good for other things too, Expensive stuff...

"Ginseng has more "cooling" properties, which make it valuable for fever and respiratory tract disorders. Asian ginseng has "heating" properties, which are good for improving circulation.

The active compounds in ginseng are believed to be steroid-like components called "ginsenosides".

BTW: most of the new cameras came out for fall.  The GF2 wouldn't be out until January 2010. Rumors are with full HD and with a new lens something like 12-70 lens. I was hoping for the GF2 to come out now.

I've got too many devices - iPhone, iPad and blackberry plus cables and charger - to carry another device around town

I too have too many gadgets and cables to carry around but looking forward to the release of the BlackPad from RIM in November. So far the Blackberry Bold is the best phone I've had and think that their BB Messenger and Email functionality is second to none. Have attached a picture of the Blackpad below.

Recently I opened a new mobile CDMA line with China Telecom. Very impressed with the call quality of CDMA and it's so cheap! Only RMB130 per month with 300m talk time and 60 hours of internet use free. If you receive calls while in different parts of China there are no roaming charges and if you were to make a call to anywhere in China from the area you purchased the phone there are also no roaming charges.. In my recent travel to northeast China to remote areas only the CDMA system worked while China Mobile reception was very poor. I also bought a USB sim reader to connect my MacBook to the internet and was surprised at the connection speed. Even better than my 10M connection at home (Used an app called Speed Test on my iPhone to conduct the test with my Macbook acting as a wifi router). Also there are no roaming charges for connecting to the Internet. Have also purchased a China Telecom phone for RMN1,100 and you can use your GSM card simultaneously with your CDMA card. This is the perfect phone for punting with dual numbers and system.
