American Alexandria Mills wins Miss World 2010 in China

A soft-spoken teen from Louisville, Kentucky beat out 114 young women around the globe for the title of Miss World on Saturday evening.
Alexandria Mills, 18, was the surprise winner in the 60th annual contest, which took place in southern China. Emma Wareus of Botswana came in second place and Adriana Vasini of Venezuela placed third.
The tall, American blonde recently graduated from high school and would like to become a teacher someday, according to her biography on the Miss World website.
It also says she’s a vegetarian and she enjoys traveling, photography and playing the French horn. Her personal motto is "The best things in life are worth waiting for, fighting for, believing in, and just never letting go of it."
A tearful Mills was crowned wearing a sparkling ivory-colored dress with a slit up the leg.
She takes the title from Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar, who won last year in South Africa.

Congratulations to Alexandria Mills!  If I had one gripe though, it's that she's just your typical midwest blonde (better than sterotyped beach blonde I guess).  No doubt she's beautiful, but I'd still like to see more girls represent the diversity in the USA.

Seems that these Miss World and Miss Universe pageants have been gradually losing their appeal over the years. In the past, the world would be fixated on their television screens to watch the contestants and outcome. These days not many people even realized the event was being held in China.

Maybe with the internet we can all get our fill of beautiful women at any time, so there is no need to tune into these sorts of shows.

Yes, and the world is demanding something more sensational and explicit instead of just seeing a few women strutting on stage. Surely, they should rethink the format of the entire show and add new segments such as a wet Tee shirt competition. Also, apart from asking questions on how the contestants intend to make the world a greener and more peaceful place, more personal questions relating to their sexual experiences and views on sex would enhance viewership. These days people are immune to scandal and this would add some life to the series.

It's been a while since a midwest blonde won hasn't it?  If anything I'd say they're underrepresented in the recent history of Miss World winners, no?

Yeah. People are jaded much earlier in life.  With the internet, you quickly have seen them all by the time you're 15. ;-)
