Why are there no Chinese maids/helpers in HK?

So, as we all know, there are many maids in HK from Indonesian and the Philippines. My question is why there are no Chinese maids? These maids seem to be able to take care of their families with the money they make, so wouldn't it be the same for the poor village girls in China? Seems like it should be a viable option for those who don't want to work in a factory, or become a prostitute. Your thoughts?

If you can employ Chinese girls as maids, this would result in a lot of abuse. I would get my newbie girls to work as a maids in HK from Zhongshan, share her with my bros, then fire her and get another. Agents too would have an easier time in recruiting HGs and they're be able to work 2 years at a stretch instead of only one week on a tourist visa.

Good question. If average low level work salary in China is 1000-1500 yans per month (1100-1700 hkd).

Can it be that being a Chinese maid mainly to Chinese families who maybe do not treat their maids as equal would be a culture issue? That families feel better employing a different nationality maid.

Edit: geoduck might have hit the nail there. Huge Visa etc issues.

Also, there is the One Country, Two systems principal. The Chinese Govt in the past do not want too many mainlanders flooding HK as this would cause an imbalance of wealth and also 'corrupt' the PRC nationals. In Macau, there are lots of PRC working in hotels but by law, they are not allowed to work inside the casinos for fear they may be 'corrupted' in a territory that is part of the PRC. However, I have noticed that some hotels have mainland staff working as waiting staff at restaurants located inside the casino which is illegal. The law stipulates there must be a minimum distance that separate PRC nationals in relation to gaming tables in the workplace.

In places such as Malaysia and Singapore, PRC staff are allowed to work as dealers at the gaming tables.

Could also be a status issue. Look at me we're doing so well we can afford to employ foreigners to clean our toilets.

I just got back from Australia today and saw that a lot of the maintenance and hotel maid workers are mainlanders.  In fact I would say that mainlanders are invading Australia in huge numbers and if the Labor Party still happens to win out there will be even more coming...

The Chinese have been slowly taking over the services industry here for decades, but this really accelerated during the high levels of immigration under the conservatives, who were in power here for 13 years before the current labor government.

What were you doing down here? How long did you stay and where in oz did you go?

Did you sample any of the local WG's?

Besides more chinese girls are too pampered with softer living and lack of  confusious values to be trusted for many jobs.  As the one child per family have created many expectations.  It is better to get foreigners who can work better and have less trouble with.

You can employ Mainland helpers to HK, however, they have to be a certain age - over 40 or so. The main reason is to prevent guys bringing their mistresses across the border!!

Actually there has chinese maid in HK (who can live in HK), but the charge is much more expensive than Philippines maid and they are work in part-time.

AP means PRC maids that are over 40. Did not know this new law has already passed though I heard this proposal was floating around 6 months ago.

Good question

... after all, maids are traditionally called an "amah" ... which is the (affectionate) Chinese word for Granny ... why?   My guess is it's because originally maids used to be older Chinese ladies!

So what changed?

What we do know is that there is STRONG and active support from the governments of Philippines and Indonesia, and maybe also to a lesser extent by Thailand and Sri Lanka, to a) encourage and celebrate "overseas foreign workers" and b) make it very easy for them to get travel documents.

So if we're not seeing PRC lassies, it must be because PRC refuses to give them exit visas.  I can't think of another explanation.

not too sure, but i think there's some treaty regarding domestic helpers.
seems like HK only signed treaties with Indonesia, Philippines & Sri Lanka, so can only "import" domestic helpers from these 3 countries.

i have a part-time amah in China.
but sometimes, when she's busy, she sends her daughter over to clean up instead.
dunno how old she is, but i think probably around 20.
average-looking.. but now during summer, she sometimes dresses very skimpily, makes me wanna go to a sauna straight away.

but it's very common for "confinement ladies" from PRC to come over to HK to work.
short-time only though.
2~3 months.

You can even hire a "wet nurse" - something that's pretty unusual in most other countries.

I remember seeing Chinese amahs when I visited years ago.  Since then I hardly see any because they have literally retired or died.  Since even a restaurant dishwasher can get $6000-$7000 a month, there is no longer an economic incentive for locals to work as amahs.

I have heard one paranoid reason PRC amahs are not so attractive to locals.  It is that a lot of ppl fear those potential PRC amahs may indeed be spies from the PLA spying on them.
