The World’s Most Expensive Cities 2010

The World’s Most Expensive Cities 2010

Strange it did not have Hong Kong listed. I recall, HK was listed as one of the most expensive places to buy property.  See times Article on HK.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The most places are located in Japan.

#1   Tokyo, Japan      - two-bedroom for 1 month is $5000 USD
#4   Nagoya, Japan
#5   Yokohama, Japan
#7   Kobe, Japan

#15  Moscow, Russia  - $3,300 per month to rent a two-bedroom apartment.

#20  Seoul, South Korea

#29  New York City     - Surprised ?   least $2,600 for a two-bedroom
#30  Sydney, Australia

The figures you are quoting are for rental not purchase, according to your 3rd link for 2009, HK ranks #5 on purchase unaffordability, but way down at #79 for rental yield (3.73%). Which would suggest a real disconnect from market realities and a correction not to far around the corner.

i was correct about my guess on tokyo japan, but i never thought it would cost $2500 USD just for a two bed room housing. guess i would have to find a room mate to cut the cost in half just to make it more affordable to live there. I'm curious about moscow though, i'll have to read more into that. i'm shocked New York came in 29th, i would of guess it ranked in the top 20.

Oh MY GOD! WOW,  I AM SO FUCKING SHOCKED AT THESE STATISTICS. I WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT TOKYO TO BE THAT EXPENSIVE. GEEZ I NEED TO CALM THE FUCK DOWN.

Anyone know how most people in tokyo live? Do most people actually own 2 bedroom homes? how many people live in 1 house on avg? how big is one house? All I know about the place is that its over crowded and once I saw on TV they sleep in like a coffin-like hole... and that it has very sexy super models that I want to bang again.

I am not surprised.  HK real estate (per sq ft) is expensive but living standard is not too bad at all.  There was a thread here a while back where I seem to conclude that a salary of 1 million HKD per year is not too bad of a lifestyle.  Same salary in nyc, you would be living paycheck to paycheck with little leftover at all.

I remember things like paying $12-20 usd for coffee in Ginza is freaking insane.  I remember a few lounges in Tokyo where there was $20-$40 for just cover charge to sit there.

Those are called Capsule room hotels.  I know those are probably the cheapest way to get some overnight sleep at about 30USD.  I don't believe people actually live in the capsule hotels though

The homeless do, Japan has an incredible homeless problem, but they don't like to talk about it, you get millions of people sleeping in capsule hotels and internet cafes. I suppose this drags the average up as theses are not counted.

While the cage homes in HK are considered to be semi permanent residences.

Having NYC at $2600 seems a little low, or is that the average in NYC?

Haven't had to rent in NYC in a long time, but I was paying about 3K a month almost 10 years ago for a  dinky 1bdrm. But this was right in Manhatten so I might be doing an apples to oranges comparison.

I am pretty sure they are includin the outer bouroughs.  Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, & Brooklyn are part of nyc.

To many people they think of only manhattan (not spanish harlem) where typical small 1 bedroom (700 sq ft) is about 3000-4500 usd per month.  Hence my assessment that 100k usd salary won't carry too far in nyc

Absolutely agree, unless you're making 250K, its tough sledding living in the city. Knew many people who took the daily commute via Amtrak into the city. Plus being in NYC, I believe you're hit with both state and local taxes. Disposable income takes a hit and add high cost of living in NYC and it's a challenge being on salary.

But I still enjoy my visits, great place for a young guy to work, having a family maybe not so much.

POV of a tourist, not as a resident: Tokyo is not really that expensive to visit. in fact, food wise, its about par as HK, and sometimes lower. hotel prices are similar to HK as well. i stayed in Ginza for less than USD200 a night 3 months ago, at a Marriott. in fact, in local currency terms, Japan is going through a deflation. 3 years ago I had Kobe beef inGinza, this year i went back to the same place, and the price was 30% lower.

I am quite sure tokyo was more expensive to HK in terms of food.  Its just my personal experience from my 3 weeks from  tokyo, osaka, nagoya, kyoto, etc.  I srsly think I was still hungry after I ate.

Prices of sushi is def. cost more than nyc.  hard to compare since japan in general has their own fish & its geared for their own own.

Comparing trying to figure out why sushi is more expensive in japan. If that's there main food would have concluded that it would be very economical to produce and serve. Why would it cost more?

I am sure others will chime in about local japanese diets.  From what I understand, typical people eat noodles way more than sushi.

I believe its not just the supply & demand of fish in japan, its also the overhead.  For example, i think Vancouver had better sushi & cost less than nyc due to lower overhead & more supply of fresh fish.

Haha, to think of it I don't think I've ever tried Sushi in NYC in all my time there, weird now that I think about it.

But yeah sushi is quite affordable in Tokyo considering how expensive I expected the city in general to be. Of course you can get it pretty fresh right at the fish market. That was an interesting place to visit.
