Taiwan plans to decriminalise sex trade

Taiwan plans to decriminalise sex trade
                From:
AFP October 14, 2010 3:36PM
TAIWAN'S government said today it plans to decriminalise the sex trade by allowing prostitutes to open small-scale businesses.
The authorities have been mulling various measures, including the creation of special sex zones, to regulate the trade amid criticism of the existing law, which punishes only sex workers but lets their customers off the hook.
The law is due to expire in late 2011, and the interior ministry has proposed new rules allowing small brothels operated by individuals or by groups of three to five sex workers.
However, the ministry has ruled out setting up red-light districts or allowing larger companies due to opposition from experts concerned that it would turn the sex trade into a regular industry, it said in a statement.
The ministry said it will submit the proposal to the cabinet's human rights committee for approval by the end of this year after collecting more feedback from the public.
A poll released by the ministry in February found that the majority of Taiwanese were in favour of creating special sex zones.
Under existing laws, prostitutes face three days in jail or a fine of up to 30,000 Taiwan dollars (950 US dollars) if they are caught providing sexual services. Their clients go unpunished.
While there is no official figure for the scale of Taiwan's sex industry, observers estimate it involves hundreds of thousands of people and generates annual revenues of up to 60 billion Taiwan dollars.

Yeah, they are finally easing up on alot of things.  For years it was like the death sentence for smoking pot.  Taiwan was pretty draconian with many laws.

It's kind of weird, they want to support the American troops, but they criminalize the activity that American troops like to engage in.     Well I guess it's live and learn.  This should make it much cheaper in Taiwan and safer.

Don't know man - but your statement's really rubbing me the wrong way.

WTF??!!
You're saying that if Taiwan - or for that matter, ANY country - wants to have American support, (or is it, if they want to support Americans,) they've got to provide hookers for the Americans?

What - Taiwanese got to make their gals as "Comfort women" to them?

Are you American?

Do you really think that in this day and age that American "support" is TRULY wanted anywhere?

I think the humor escapes people.  Okay let me clarify, we all know that Hong Kong yearly gets tons of American soldiers showing up,
meeting up having sex WG, have fun, then go home.  Dumping millions dollars into Hong Kong's economy.

Taiwan does not have to provide comfort women, but it's a definite plus for their local economy if women volunteer to work as WG.  We all know prostitution exists in virtually every country, from an economic point of view, making money on American soldiers is probably common, and was done during the Roman times where romans soldiers  had sex all the time.

So if all these troops just have to be there, prostitution regardless
of laws and circumstances will always be in any country.  It's just makes more economic sense to allow the prostitutes to operate legally, like Hong Kong, and make alot of money like Hong Kong.

Since prostitution is underground in Taiwan, it's not regulated enough to do health checks for STD's, ensure regular hours, and
slavery is not occuring.  Once it's legal it's will be possible ensure safer sex by control the spread of STD's.

Since I'm assuming less Taiwanese girls want to be prostitutes
because it's illegal, the supply for prostitutes will be lower,
therefore price will be higher if the demand is the same.
So once they legalize it, more girls may want to enter the job,
or keep being prostitutes increasing supply, therefore decreasing the price.  If the price has always been too high, it
would then be legal for girls from other countries to come
to Taiwan, and meet the demand curve for sex, and
lower prices in the process.

You really think your American $$$ is all that important to us?  What... that we need to whore our women folks just to get your US$$??

Dumping millions dollars into Hong Kong's economy??  FACT - America OWES so much to China, Japan etc  that there's hardly any hope that you Americans will ever get out of debt with us.
millions of $$, Yeah - BIG FARKIN' DEAL!

And why would we need for your troops to be here?  Fact is, your troops NEEDS our permission to land on our shores - permission which we regularly deny.

The same thing even in Okinawa where your troops makes a mess of things and quite regularly get jailed for rape and other indecencies.

Whether Taiwan legalizes prostitution or not has absolutely nothing to do with providing prostitutes to American Troops. Period.

And no, there's no humour in your statements at all - it's JUST your Yankee misplaced-Superiority complex, insensitivity AND IGNORANCE on full show.

I don't even know where to begin.  I just hope everyone here don't think all Americans think like this.

so in your world, since we have troops in Iraq & Afghanistan, we should free up the people there. open their economy & open the sex trade for the American troops raise the GDP of the respective nation. Something is screwy with your ideology bro...& that is coming from a deeply rooted american here.

chewie10,

I think you over-estimate how much "american troops" spend on mongering. If anything, american troops have been largely detrimental to the global mongering industry.

China/Japan/korea both have alot of places that are completely anti-foreigner because of instances with the american military.

Unlike other developing countries, Hong Kong / Taiwan doesn't need the prostitution money to survive and help its economy. Someone else on the this forum or another forum said the same thing about China. Twenty years ago I would agree about China needing money but not now. China / Taiwan including Hong Kong, they don't need the money.

And who are you replying/directing your comment to?

What's the Rich/poor divide got anything to do with what we're discussing here.

Or is this just your way to get posting credits?
Thanks

If you haven't know, China is now the 3rd or 4th largest economic superpower.  It is estimated it will supass the USA in 2017.

For the gap between the rich and the poor, the usa has a problem too.

"The Wealth Divide The Growing Gap in the United States Between the Rich and the Rest"

The top 5 percent own more than half of all wealth. In 1998, they ( rich ) owned 59 percent of all wealth. Or to put it another way, the top 5 percent had more wealth than the remaining 95 percent of the population, collectively.
