New Computer

I need to buy a new computer system. I'm too dumb to build one up from parts. Looking at Dell and HP.
Any views on which is better? I'm looking for speed, reliability and lots of storage space for home videos,
pictures and music. I don't play any games. Can go to $20,000 for the complete set-up. Preferably, I'd like
to buy on-line. Hate talking to computer salesmen.

Thanks for any advice.

Yeah, should have said that - I want a desk top. Space isn't a problem.

20K for a branded PC...
not worth it..
even if you are loaded, i think you should still save the money for punting..

go to Golden Computer Center at SSP..
u can get a very high-end PC for less than half the price.
if you really hate to small-talk with the sales people, just walk around the shops..
u will see they have a lot of small pamplets on the counter..
each listing a PC's spec and its price.. ranging anything from HK$1,999 ~ HK$19,999..
pick one, pay money, tell them to assemble and install, you come back in 2 hours' time to pick up your new PC.

Agree with kaka that you should get a computer from one of the computer cities. either SSP or Wanchai. These places don't really make too much profit. They'll worry about part compatibility and putting it all together. All you gotta worry about is what you want the new box to do. You can also just print out the specs on a dell box and ask them to build a similar one for you.

I'd personally go this way with upgraded parts (ie. quieter case, larger heatsink for the cpu) to keep the computer cool and quiet. One thing to note, if you go with one of those really compact and small computers, they'll most likely be really noisy and run really hot. Not a good combination in HK.

If you do go the route that Kaka suggests, there are couple of places you can go.  One is the Golden Computer Arcade that Kaka suggested, and the others are the 298 Computer Mall on Hennessy Road, Wanchai, and the Wanchai Computer Mall.  Prices do not varied too much from each other.

Most of the vendors provide some sort of warranty that requires you to physically lug your computer back to them to check.  So from my experience of lugging desktops around HK, choose the place that is closest to where you live.

Just be advised that while Dell support is very good, they won't warranty the unit against bullet holes.

Also, the Dell units will not allow you to send email.  They'll only allow you to see prostitution related chat sites, so you'll have to have your pals forward all your emails.

I have a Sony desktop all in one.
I am quite happy because of the big screen and great quality of the image.
I was in hesitation between the mac all in one and the sony one.
I finally choose the Sony one.

I used to suffer from virus hassles with my PC before switching to a Mac.  I'd get the anti-virus software and keep it up to date but every so often something would slipthrough.  Also the hassle of keeping the anti-virus current and dealing with all the spam from Mcafee or Norton (they keep spamming you to update when you've got years left on your subscription) was an incentive to switch.

Since you aren't looking for a gaming system, you probably don't need to spend that much money for a high end system. It is usually the cost of a high end video card that drives the price so high.

You mention home videos. Do you intend to do video editing with your home clips? If so, you should be looking for a fast processor and a secondary high speed drive with lots of capacity to do the editing on. The initial drive that the operating system and programs are installed on needn't be nearly as large as most of the storage and working space should be performed on the secondary drive.

I am assuming that you will be installing a version of windows 7. You can't have too much RAM for windows, certainly not less than 4GB.

You are definitely better off to have it built locally by a reputable dealer that will offer a minimum of one year warranty and a satisfactory service plan. Dealing with any of the major computer suppliers online will surely result in long waits and absence of your computer if you are ever in the situation where you must return it to the dealer for servicing.

I have built dozens of computers through the years and have serviced and repaired hundreds of brand named computers during the same period. With all the proprietary parts and components often used by the major suppliers, once the computer is out of warranty and a couple of years old, replacing failed components becomes a major nuisance.

Good luck on your next computer ..... I hope it serves you well.

i'm a pro-dell, i've been using dell for company and personal use many years now and it has not failed on me. if you're running window 7, as waldo said, you need ram, lots of it. Dell has a pretty decent warranty service and tech support if needed.

It's just that porn sites are favorite vectors for malware because of their high traffic.  A Mac helps you defend against that.  It ain't perfect, but it helps.

That's true. But I think Linux is even better. However, using firefox on any platform is already much better.

I have a Dell and love it.

Figured out that for the price of 3 Dells I can only buy 2 of pretty much any other brand ... treat yourself and get a high end machine - LOTS of RAM with the highest available bus speed, and these days a nice video card makes the fancier features of Windows run more smoothly.  These days CPU speed is not as important as RAM and video cards - but the high-end machines will have a fast CPU as well.

An extra screen is a big nice-to-have when you're browsing for hotties (so you can open the pop-up photo viewer on the second one while you're browsing their profiles on your main screen).  Not at all expensive these days, for your budget you can afford to splurge!

It's worth buying the onsite service support from Dell, not expensive and protects you from trying to play phone tag with a customer support guy if you ever happen to need one.  They're really efficient: give them the "tag number" of the machine and they already know its preloaded configuration.  That means it's worth getting them to preload everything you want (Widows, Orifice, other standard stuff), again no point cutting corners and trying to do something they can do for you.

Hear Ye!  The Mayor has spoken!
