The Melbourne Cup - It's the race that stops a nation... or so they say.

Realistically, though, it has become a booze filled debarcle - I think that everyone with any sense would avoid it like the plague, unless you want to get in a fight with a drunk or vomit on your shoes.

Not sure what horse racing is like in the rest of the world, but in Australia it's just an excuse to drink and behave badly (IMHO).

The biggest handicapped (weighted) horserace in the world with 20-something horses from around the globe running over 3,200metres, and yes, the race that stops a nation.  

Alcopop was about $5.70 at the start of the day, but obviously after talking him up here on this forum, he dropped to early $5.00 and became the favourite ..... Race has now finished and he was out of the placings, which is not a surprise as the favourites very rarely get up.  The winner was Shocking.

i think the locals don't care much abt the cup, they pretty much have one every week
