Going to Italy and France - I need help!

Ciao & Bonjour;

Seeking help and advise from all French and Italian readers. I will be travelling to Northern Italy and Paris September 17. Kind brothers, please advise what is a budget way to travel from North Italy to Paris. I also need to know what or which reasonable quality Hotel to stay while over there. Please help!

In Paris, France the MOST important thing is to visit is the Louvre Museum and of course the Eiffel Tower.

In Italy - Verona and Milan. Please advise how do I travel from these places to Paris? Do I fly or take the TGV/EUROSTAR or whatever the bullet train is call? If possible, kindly advise the rates for the trains too.

My flight will take me to Verona first for a convention (5 days) after that I will be free for the next 9 days. Will really appreciate your good and kind advise. This is my 2nd time to visit Europe. The first was South-Eastern Europe (Turkey, Greece and Jordan)

A BIG THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Bro mauvanilla;

Thank you for the link advise. I will try my best to get the info. Actually, sex and lust is the last thing on my mind. Foremost important is the 'know how' to move from Italy to Paris easily and economically.

Definitely take the train when in Europe.   The ride from northern Italy through southern France, or via the Switzerland route, to Paris is quite beautiful; and train travel, unlike the cattle-car airport/airline exp., is very relaxing, as well as a great way to view the countries you'll be passing through. The train trip will be a bit longer but bear in mind that since train stations are situated in the centers of cities, you'll avoid the expensive and time-consuming taxi rides to/from airports.

Europeans take great pride in their train networks, and unlike in most parts of the world, trains in Europe are very comfortable, clean and quiet. When I lived in Rome, I always took the train wherever I went in Western Europe. Believe me, if you can spare a few more hours, nothing beats the train.

Hello Mars;

I thank you for your time and advise, really appreciate. Hope I am able to return the favour.

How is the situation in Taiwan? Saw in the news, very bad. Hope you are not effected. Definately, I will be taking the train so that I can enjoy the view. My next question, is the train call EUROSTAR? Perhaps I could get a tourist ticket or something more economical?

You see, the air-ticket and 4 nights hotels are provided for ,so got no idea which carrier or destination from Hong Kong, I think I will probably transit in Frankfurt. I actually wanted them to book me to Verona for my convention (One-Way) and fly back from CDG Paris, France. We shall see. Otherwise, I will need to spend more time and money on train tickets to return to Italy for my flight back to Hong Kong.

check out hostelworld for accommodations.  forgot the exact address, but you'll find it easy in a googlesearch.  you'd be surprised at how many decent places are actually listed and that are more similar to actual hotels.  i agree about taking the train too.  fast and cheap.

I left Italy 4 yrs ago so to tell you the truth I don't remember the names of the trains. The TGV is the French high speed train, tho the Eurostar or Eurorail is what I think I took when traveling. Just punch in Eurostar, or Europe train travel, or sthg like that into Google. I think the tickets are cheaper if bought online. Also, a good travel agent in HK could give you advice, but I'd just plan out my itinerary and then check the online fares. Doesn't matter where you're going in Europe, the trains go everywhere and are what most people take.

If you like coffee, when in Milan, go to a good cafe and have a couple of Cafe Machiatos just so you'll know what good coffee should taste like. Don't order Lattes of Cappuchinos and dilute the great espresso with a ton of milk. You'll never be satisfied with Starbucks coffee again. Also try Italian pasta in a good restaurant - believe me it's a totally different dish over there.

When in Paris (I lived in Paris for a year back in the eighties), try to find a cheap business hotel or hostel in the left bank area. It's the nicest part of Paris and within walking distance of the better parts of the city - tho you'll need to take the subway to the Eiffel Tower.

Here in Taipei, the typhoon wasn't a problem. Anyway, I love extreme weather.

BTW, Milan isn't the most beautiful of Italian cities, the nearby Florence (Firenze) is much more picturesque. And if you're into art, the Uffizi in Florence is one of the great world-class museums.

Reply #8 Marsupial's post

Hi Mars again;

I fell so bad for using up so much of your time on my expences. Yes, this trip is about education - History and Arts. Museum and Gallery is a MUST. I will probably spend most of my free time burried in Museums and of course taste their food. You are correct, again, about their food. I once went onboard a vessel with Italian crew, what they cooked up was fantastic. So much different from the local Italian restaurant. The food onboard was so authentic, even the wine tasted better.

Haha LOL,,,,I am a coffee addict. Without coffee, I am like a zombie in the morning. I started going to Ho Chi Minh City about 3 years ago, have been there 6 times since the maiden trip. Will be visiting HCMC again in November. Tried their coffee and it was very strong and robust. So, STARBUCKS out the window and in came Vietnamese roast type of coffee. It is those you put the coffee powder into a drip and let the black gold drip into your cup. Iced Vietnamese coffee is also nice.

So, I will make Florence on my to-do list. Thank you very much again for your kind advise. Hope I am able to repay your kindness one day!

Check out tripadvisor.com for hotel and accomodation reviews - it was only recently I noticed they do "specialist accomodation" also, i.e. non-hotel accomodation, so should be useful for hostels also.

Very useful, real life reviews (bit like this place!!) and photos (hmmmmm...so imagine 141 website but about hotels lol!)

Dear dboy721;

Thanks for your advise. I will check the link accordingly. My trip has been brought forward to September 16 and the convention will last till the 21st. So I am on my own then. My plan is to vist Florence and Milan (Italy) and then will take a train to Paris. Will sacrifice the air ticket provided for as I do not want to waste my time travelling back to Verona for my flight back to Paris. They have booked me on Air France from HKG-CDG-VRN and back.

Thanks and RGDS

Dear Mars;

I should be the one who envy you. At least you have lived in Europe. We are just traveller. Going to Italy and France has been one of my Dreams. This will be an Educational travel but if chance arise, I might try those Czech or Romanian WG's. I trust local French and Italian are too expensive, heard from a friend these will cost about 300 EUROS. I rather masturbate and spend the money in CP.

This is my second trip. Both times lucky, all the tickets are provided for and also the accomodation for the first few days. Then the rest of the days are on my own. So must be frugal as Europe is rather expensive compared to South-East Asia and Hong Kong. I went to the trains website, a single trip from Florence to Paris is about 70 pounds. Will have to transit at Bologna. Anyway, I will be looking forward to the adventure.

Thanks again Mars!

I have no experience, but they say not to bring any fake branded goods into Europe or you will denied entry. Could someone verify this matter?

Hello HonestCrook;

I wonder how can a crook be honest. Thank you for bringing up this subject about A-Product to Europe. Luckily, I don't have any fake branded goods, and even real/genuine ones for that matter. Simply can't afford them. I don't even have an expensive watch, I am a SWATCH and CASIO guy.

Anyway thanks

waikeekee;

Think of me as Robin Hood or Aladdin. Always trying to do good but it is easier to be a bad guy. I envy you, able to go to Europe and have some fun after your work is done. Why couldn't I   have a boss or work in a Company like yours? Well, looks like the grass is really grenner on the other side.

Ok my friend.

Instead of pissing off your ticket, let me propose something for you. Don't go to Paris.

The louvre will take a week to go round properly, and if you rush you won't return..."like to go back, but seen it already...should go to prague instead..."

It's not going anywhere so go next time.

Matey is right. The Uffizi is fantastic. With Siena down the road, Tuscany is a place to spend time soaking up history and art by itself. Don't ruin it by spending a day on a train, and then hitting Paris.

Milan - even the Milanese say it's a shit hole.

My advice is to feck off Milan. hit the road south to Firenze and Siena. Then shoot north Venice, and spend as much time there as your nose can take, and then return to LakeGarda (across the lake from VErona) for cocktails with george Clooney and the rest of the A-Listers who all live there.

Of course any < 7 day trip trying to take in northern Italy and Paris is going to be rushed, and Venice is definitely a must see - there's no place else on earth like Venice - but trying to do Firenze, Siena, Venice, not to mention Verona, in less than a week is also going to require a lot of running around and skipping many of the must-see spots in each of those cities. In any case, I don't think waikeekee sees his trip as an exhaustive introduction to any particular region. And 3 multi-hour train rides plus all the logistical hassle involved in changing hotels isn't going to be any less time consuming and will certainly be more fatiguing than one longer trip to Paris.

For the amount of time he has, I would limit myself to 2 or 3 days in a couple of cities, and doing Firenze and Paris is just as legitimate a trip as concentrating on 3 or 4 cities in northern Italy, especially with a long relaxing train ride between the two. But bear in mind that I love train trips through the European countryside, esp. the Alps - tho make sure you get a window seat in at least a 2nd class carriage.

Oh ya, waikeekee, if you're Asian looking, be careful in Italy that cab drivers and restaurants don't try to over charge you. That's more likely to happen in Rome and the south, but it's wise to keep an eye on the bill wherever you go in Italy. I'm afraid the gullible and uncomplaining Japanese have set a bad precedent.

In any case, when in Paris take the Metro. Firenze is a small town and you'll probably be able to walk where you want. Don't want to sound like you dad, but always buy a map. Both in Paris and Italy the fixed price meals are often a good bargain. Stand-up coffee at the bar can avoid most of the price that comes with taking a table - tho sitting at one of the famous left-bank cafes in Paris is a a great way to check out the local chicks.
