Housing in Hong Kong

Hey Guys,

I got a buddy coming to study abroad in Hong Kong this fall from the US, for his MBA.  He is a Japanese American kid, very simple, and is looking for a place to stay between the periods of August 22 2009 to January 5th 2010.  Does anyone here know a place that he can rent for that short period of time?

Here is the catch, rent in America is cheap in very suburban areas so right now hes been paying US$400 a month for his rent but he is willing to find something $10,000 and below either for a small room or to share?

If anyone knows a place that can rent this cheap or has any options, i be grateful.

He will be studying at HKUST which is by Clearwater bay?
Alright
Thanks

Has your friend tried to contact the university for lodging as staying at the university would be cheaper than renting outside the univeristy.

Hey

I asked him that and he said, they gave him a real estate agents number to call because his type of student classification is not given a place on campus.  Meaning that because he is a exchange student from the US, they cannot give him housing under that specific MBA program.  He said he doesnt even wanna argue with them anymore.  PLus he figures taht if he lives in a dorm, they be more strict and etc.  I am unsure, I mean i have never been to school in HK so I wouldnt know if i could compare dorms to colleges back in the US.

So he said hes just gonna find his own place.

Try this site as a starting point - http://www.gohome.com.hk/english/home.asp - have apartment listings for the whole of HK.

There is another site - http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/property/ - which has some listing for share apartment listings.

I wouldn't bother about the estate agents as they will not have your friend's interest at heart and will make you rent towards your upper budget limit.

Happy house hunting

Tseung Kwan O is about 10 mins away by car, has lots of small partly furnished apartments for rent under 10K ...
only thing is I'm not sure if they'll rent for 5 months.

Which University?  If it's UST, he'd want to be out in NT.  If it's PolyU or HKU or CitiU, probably downtown.

$10k can get him a nice serviced appartment, e.g. in Hung Hom.

Or out in Clearwater Bay (closer to UST) he should be able to find one unit of a village house for around $7k.

for 10K and just one dude...lots of choices all over the place.  Sai Kung would be close to his uni...but lots of places close to the city too within that budget.  Might need to work a bit on the short-term arrangement as many don't want to rent that short.

i don't think you/he should commit to anything before he gets here.  Just walk into any real estate joint and have the agent show you some places.  although you need to pay the commission, better that he gets something he picked himself.

I think your best bet is a serviced apartment given the short lenght of stay. The nearest one to the university is Horizon Suite Hotel in Man On Shan. It's under your mate's budget. Check out http://www.horizonsuitehotel.com/eng/index.html

No need for security deposit to save some cash

ma on shan to hkust will be troublesome by public transport. even by car, that's about a 30 minute drive assuming no traffic. think horizon suites has a shuttle bus to the green line, to choi hung or kowloon bay. if you do that, then train to lei yue mun, transfer, train to hang hau, minibus to hkust -- that's about an hour, not including waiting times. i think there's a bus from ma on shan to sai kung, then minibus to hkust, maybe less than an hour.
anyway, my point is, while horizon suites might be good for people living along their shuttle buses' route, too out of the way for everyone else.
i seem to remember coming across a few people in the sai kung / clearwater bay area willing to rent out furnished apartments (probably middle floors in village houses) for less than 7k. just search diligently on google. sorry, i would do it for you, but too long (2 days) without my 141 fix.
http://www.gohome.com.hk/english/home.asp is a good place to start. most agents won't want to do less than one year lease, i think. but shouldn't be too hard to find someone who can help your mate. the trouble with many of the agents on gohome is a lot of them don't answer e-mails, just phone calls.

While true, it's still a headache to travel. It's two buses to get from MOS to UST - first to Sai Kung then Sai Kung to UST.  Probably about 45-60 min including waiting time.  Car would be better, but if you're going to all that trouble you wouldn't want to live in MOS, nothing there for an expat to do, very dead.  Much better to be in CWB (one bus only) if you want to be in the country-side, and that way you're close to Hang Hau and 30 minutes MTR from Wan Chai / Central / LKF / TST / etc.
