Monger's dream: Chrome

this is worth mentioning ... the new browser from Google has an "incognito" function, so you can browse without leaving any history or cookies on the PC you're using ...

any use to you?

you can get Google Chrome here

Sure - firefox is more mature and has a huge library of plugins.  I still use it most of the time.

But the earlier thread doesn't mention the "incognito" function.  Chrome is the only browser I know that handles incognito ... worth mentioning that to the bros in this forum    Much less hassle than cleaning up history, or having an unbreakable password (that you can't risk giving to IT techs).

And it is clean and fast ...

I didn't realize Chrome had an "incognito" function when I last tried it out. In fact I was not even aware there was such a thing as an "incognito" function. It definitely would be great for those who visit XXXX sites on a regular basis.

But I wonder if the effect is the same as turning on the "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" setting and setting the "Days to keep pages in history:" to zero days in IE7.

The article Puff referenced mentioned that IE8 also has the "incognito" function. I've tested IE8 before but think IE7 is still the better of the two. I wouldn't change from IE7 just because of this one function. To me, Chrome and IE8 are still works-in-progress.

At least I know now what an "incognito" function is.

I tried Firefox about 4 or 5 years ago, didn't like it and returned to IE. Can't remember why I didn't like it.

I used it several months ago, when it first launched. Yes, indeed the incognito mode is handy, but I tend to forget. Also, Chrome remembers your recently visited websites in thumbnails on your homepage. Don't want this site to appear when my girlfriend uses my laptop You'd probably could turn it off, but why change a winning formula (Firefox).

... that one reminds me of the old debate between command-lines and GUI!  Cracks me up every time ... techies still like command lines and custom configurations and think the rest of the world should too ... but everyone else loves the simplicity of a built-in functionality.  Guess you can do it with Firefox, but how many people actually knew about profiles??  The reality is that as bad as it is, 80% of the installed base is still IE ... Not seen IE8 myself, but I personally don't expect to go back to IE any time soon.

Check out chrome.  I'm using it these days when I run google apps - probably about 50% of what I do on line these days.  Firefox for the rest.

The incognito function of Chrome doesn't do anything more than what clearing private data does in any other browser. More importantly, it does nothing to make your browser more secure from all the malware that's hidden in the HTML of some websites. To do that you need to control what is actually run on your computer when you open a site in your browser.

I do most of my browsing using Firefox with the NoScript and Adblock Plus addons installed. These addons block all adds, scripts, Java and Flash applets. As a result, on sites like this, I get none of those annoying, winking-blinking adds at the top of the page. Websites use Java and Flash to throw all sorts of shit at you, so disabling them has the added benefit of protecting you from most of the malware and page redirects many of the dodgier sites hide in their HTML.

However, on occasion, Adblock and NoScript will interfere with some desired function of an important website (see NoScript link below), and there are times when I want to view Flash, so I also installed another FF addon called IE Tab. This allows you to right click on a page in FF, or click the IE Tab icon if you've placed it in the toolbar, and directly open the page in Internet Explorer which appears as a separate tab in FF. Very cool, but I don't like IE. So I installed Opera, which is a much quicker and more secure browser than IE (edit: the new IE 8 is much more secure than previous versions). In the IE Tab configuration window, under the External Application tab there is a setting for External App - set this for Opera (in the case of WindowsXP, it would be C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe). Then if you ever find a page that doesn't function properly because of the above security addons, just right click anywhere in that page and chose View Page In Ext.App and the page will open in Opera with nothing disabled.

NoScript  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
(Note: you can right-click on the NoScript toolbar icon to allow scripts on any page. Important! in order to be able to post on this site, you must right click on the NoScript toolbar icon and choose Allow sex141.com - you only need to do this once.)

Adblock Plus  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
(Note: if an undesired image/add does make it through the filters, just right-click on the image and choose Adblock Image from the context menu and it's gone forever.)

IE Tab  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

I never use Google, by the way; they collect and archive far too much info on your individual searches. That's right kids, somewhere on a Google computer is a record of all your searches over the years matched to your IP address - after all, targeting ads based on user search history is how Google makes it's money. To avoid this, I use ScroogleScraper, which is a site that submits your search request to Google and then displays the exact same search results but with your personal info stripped out - think of Scroogle as a proxy server between you and Google.

Scroogle http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm

If anyone is interested, I can show you how to make Scroogle your default FF toolbar search engine.

This is what my browser window looks like with these addons installed:

(edit: FireFox 3.5 now has an option under 'Tools' called 'Start Private Browsing' that does the same thing as the incognito function in the Google Chrome browser.)

IE or Firefox I don't think there's really that great a difference. I just stick to what I'm most comfortable with.

The incognito function is really easy to use, and will hide pretty much all breadcrumbs from your browser including cookies, history, temp files etc. Of course, if someone has the will and technical knowhow then I'm sure they can still check what you've been doing online. Chrome just makes it hard for them to do it.

Please note that companies can still monitor what traffic goes through their servers... So nothing's 100% secure

Chrome does give a warning about safety in the incognito mode:-

You've gone incognito. Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.

Going incognito doesn't affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:

- Websites that collect or share information about you
- Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
- Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
- Surveillance by secret agents
- People standing behind you

For all you firefox supporters, Mozilla have recently launched a new 3.1 beta 2 version of their firefox browser. It also comes with a private browsing mode - similar to the chrome functionality.

I love the way many browsers advertise that incognito modes are great for "if you are shopping for family Christmas presents and don't want to spoil the surprise.", when they know full well that it will be used for "surfing Japanese porn sites and emailing the yee-lai"
