Any good places for Pho?

last time i was in Hong Kong, all i ate was chinese food. Frankly, most HK'ers say that Hong Kong is the best place for Chinese Food.. Well, you'd have to come to NY, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.. if u think that.. anyways.. i am craving for PHO and Spring Rolls. Anyone knows where i can go for some great vietnamese food? How bout some good bulgogi? korean food.. mmm

for korean food, i have come across 2!

first one is in tst, about 5 minutes walk from avenue of the stars! facing nathan road, walk on the left side, turn left, then first right!

here you will find other restaunrants such as pizza express, ebeneezer kebabs etc

the other korean place was at causway bay! dont remember how i got there, so you will have to ask the locals when you get there

I don't think so because he mentioned NY as a place for good Chinese food.  No way in hell can the Chinese girls in NY compare to the Chinese girls in HK, and I'm not even gonna talk about the food.  Horrible compared to HK.

i wouldnt be surprised when some overseas born chinese thinks hk chinese food isnt as good as where they came from because good restaurants in hk are all so HIDDEN!

they have a really small entrance and often not very noticeable!

you really need a local to take you to these places!

the same applies to finding good WGs!

I agree for the most part.  Some of these joints with awesome food in HK look like holes in the wall.  My fav congee place has seats that make you want to eat standing up.  So straight and so tight.  Super uncomfortable and they pack you in like sardines.

Any newbie to the area should just subtly (or perhaps not so subtly) bring up a convo about WGs with a cabbie and they can automatically hook you up.  This goes for every cabbie with some experience, I would think, in the entire universe.  Just drop him some coin and he'll gladly drive you around.  They might have their own agendas (bring you to a place where they get more commission), but then again how the hell are you gonna know?

You can't be serious when you think that chinese food in the US is better than HK... I've lived in the US for 6 years, and for each of those 6 years I've craved to eat chinese food in HK as there is absolutely no comparison

The chinese food there is... just not chinese food! So happy that I'm back in HK again!! For food and girls!

chinese food in toronto is alright though! but again, its not in downtown chinatown! chinatown is more of a tourist place now! they should call it vietnamese town with the amount of vietnamese people!

the chefs are mainly from mainland china with little cooking experiece! no offence!

the best chefs are those who immigrated from hk during 97! they are all based in the surburbs of markham? (dont remember exact name) and scarborough!

they have created what they call the new chinatown!

all the good shit happens here i tell you. it doesnt get more hk than here cos restaurants open at 4am to serve congee

The Chinese food in the US and in Canada isn't even close in comparison.  Canada is waaaay better.  But I still think it's better in HK and in China over Canada because of the ingredients.  The fish in the waters is better for steaming, etc.  Veggies are better suited for stir frying, etc.  In Canada and the US there is still a lot of close substitutes that, while fine, is still not the same.  Even the pork - it's too lean in Canada and the US.  I'm not even going to get into the chicken.  The chicken in HK isn't even close to the chicken in China.  I mean that in both respects.

The PHO in Canada is great too...the best PHO is in Mississauga, Canada! Love that PHO!

Actually I don't know where you can get great PHO in HK because I never get PHO, but this is my favourite Viet restaurant..check it out!

Well I agree with you for the chicken, and more or less the pork.  But veggies??  The seafood in most part of the country (unless you're living in the west or east coast) are not as great as here, but afte rall, HK i's an island right?  As I matter of fact I think some of the most expensive seafood items (here) were shipped from NA.  Geoduck?  Maine Lobster? Oysters?  To come to think of it, don't the best steakhouses here serve USDA?

I guess with most cities, you're gonna have to have a local bring you around.  Toronto, is full of great restaurants.. but on the flip side, there's a lot of shitty ones.  Just gotta know where to look.

Well anyways... back on topic mindfreakart... I've tried a lot of the Viet restaurants here, and NOTHING comes close to what you can get in NA. And I'm just speaking in terms of Toronto, I'm guessing the population of Viet is even higher in Cali.   For a quick fix, go ahead, they're all pretty much the same, but if your an aficionado... you're shit outta luck

The veggies as in the variety here in HK/China is different.  Sweet potato leaves, some kinds of snow pea leaves, etc., you can't get in the States.  And a lot of places I go to here in China, you ask for a certain veggie, they'll pick the veggies right out of the farm in the back.  Just like a live fish.  Doesn't get any better than that.  Hard to find stuff like that in the States or Canada.

As for the seafood, the imported seafood is definitely going to be pricier, i.e., Maine lobster for 400HKD/lb., etc.  If I get sea urchin in NY from Japan, it's def going to be more exp than sea urchin from Maine.  Does it mean it's better?  No.  It just means I'm willing to pay more for the imported stuff.

I'll give North America props on the beef - the beef sux here in Asia (not incl Japan).

Well I can't really speak of the rest of NA, but where I'm from (Toronto), our selection of food, whether it be vegetables, seafood, etc. is vast.  I have yet to see, any vegetable that I've seen here that I couldn't get back home.  Well, some tropical fruits I guess, and even if we do have those, they're not great.  As for veggies (used for stir fry's and what not), yah we have it.  They may not be picked from the back that day, but nonetheless fresh as they usually come from some local farm.

Fresh fish?  Of course.  Wherever there is Chinese, the need/demand for live fish is there, you know we wouldn't have it any other way.  I cant' go down to the pond and get me one, but I can walk into the many Chinese supermarkets, littered across the GTA, and have them bop one on the head for me.

I don't wanna nitpick, nor start a war of words, but most the uni sold in Japan is from California.

I agree with you in the sense that GTA and Van's Chinese food is much, much better than in NY, etc., but they both, IMO, still don't hold a candle to China and HK, just like the sandwiches here suck to high heaven compared to NYC.  I have family in GTA and have been there dozens of times.  It also makes plenty of sense because of the 1997 handover.  Lots of Hongkies left to GTA and Vancouver because it was easier to get visas.
