But cannot open others.......windows media player does not recognise file even after aquiring the codecs...

try using VLC player.
can virtually playback any format with any codecs...

You have them joined and it still won't work?  What codecs did you install?  Try Xvid and/or divx, usually if you have these installed should be able to play just about anything, works fine for me on regular mediaplayer.  

Let me know if you manage to get it to work.

As for me I used Codec All-in One, with this codec I use Window Media Player Classic and I can watch any and all files!
