US Election - Sarah Palin

Any reservations I had about the inexperience of Barack Obama have been shot to pieces by John McCain's stupid,
moronic, idiotic, cynical decision to choose Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate. The guy is 72 and has
already suffered a bout of cancer. Statistically, there must be a very good chance that he'll become unable to
complete his 4-year term, if he were to win the election. And yet he wants to put Sarah Palin as next in line to
be Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces. For me, that's a terrifying prospect and John McCain should be
ashamed for even allowing such a possibility to exist.

I used to have a lot of respect for John McCain but now I see he's just another cynical politician who cares more
about winning an election than what's good for his country. Not to mention the rest of us.

Now I just hope and pray that Barrack Obama can win this election.

P.S. It also shows up the idiocy of the US election system that something like this can be possible.

We're screwed!

Strong rumours from my American friends that Obama will be shot by fundamentalist rednecks. Unfortunately the other option will probably get us into WWIII!

When asked by reporter Charles Gibson, in a recent interview, about her foreign-policy qualifications, Palin, citing the example of Russia, said:

“They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.”

When asked about Pakistan, Palin had this to say:

“We must not, Charlie, blink, Charlie, because, Charlie, as I’ve said, Charlie, before, John McCain has said, Charlie, that — and remember here, Charlie, we’re talking about John McCain, Charlie, who, Charlie, is John McCain and I won’t be blinking, Charlie."

And this was after a week of intense prepping by Republican party spin doctors to prevent her making a fool of herself.

From an editorial in today's NYTimes (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/13/opinion/13sat1.html?em) referring to McCain:

"If he seriously thought this first-term governor — with less than two years in office — was qualified to be president, if necessary, at such a dangerous time, it raises profound questions about his judgment. If the choice was, as we suspect, a tactical move, then it was shockingly irresponsible."

This is how democracy distinguishes itself in the United States: a country that can boast some of the brightest minds in the world intends to make up for 8 yrs of the atrocious Bush administration by electing McCain and Palin; 50% of Americans are once again ready to vote Republican because they can "relate" to this moron mom from Alaska, the very same reason they gave for choosing Bush over Gore.

The 72 yr-old McCain has suffered several bouts of cancer, and is already showing signs of forgetfulness. The stat guys tell us there's a 1 in 3 chance that at some point, his veep would have to take over. So if McCain has a 50/50 chance of winning the election, which is what the recent polls tell us, that means there is a now 1 in 6 chance that this woman will eventually become President. Kind of like Russian Roulette!

There was an interesting blog in The Guardian recently in which the British author wrote that up until now Europeans have been quick to point out that their problem was not with the American people, but with the Bush administration; but that if after all that has happened these last 8 years, we Americans don't elect Obama, Europeans are going to realize that the problem isn't just the Republicans party but Joe Sixpack himself.

A good column on McPalin from Thomas Friedman, http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/opinion/14friedman.html?em

Totally agree with you.  McCain and his team have appointed Palin in an attempt to capture the disenfranchised Hillary Clinton voters.  Palin is dangerous.  I cannot say it any other way.  This appointment was a desperate attempt from an out of touch campaign.  Heres hoping Obama wins the election.

For those of you who are confused

from Michael Tomasky's blog in The Guardian

I received this email over the weekend from a friendly acquaintance. It should help sort out some questions you may have. The subject heading on the email was "I was confused but now I'm not":

This took some figuring out

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers -- a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track -- you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend five different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

If you spend three years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a constitutional law professor, spend eight years as a state senator representing a district with more than 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, four years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with fewer than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising two beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner-city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

If your husband is nicknamed "First Dude," with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

I was confused at first too .

It's all spin spin spin. Dollars for advertising and slagging off the opposition goes most of the way to winning the election (imo).

What is really scary is she is only one heart attack away from being the leader of the US with McCain being 72 and in heart attack country.  Has nayone heard her laughable explanation as to why she has a greater understanding of foreign policy then Obama?  Becasue Alaska is close to Russia!!!!  duh!!! She is not only dangerous, she is DUMB!

Ah, feel better already.

I can't believe that even the Americans could be so dumb as to elect McCain and Palin over Obama and Biden.
Just seems like a no-contest to me.

I watched the final presidential debate and Barack Obama is looking and sounding more and more like a future
President. John McCain, on the other hand, is sounding more and more like a desperate loser. He'll probably
lose the election and it's just a shame that he's also had to lose his self-respect, his dignity and his integrity.

i watched it to this morning and agree with you Jake.  McCain seems to repeat the same stuff over and over again.  Obama sure is looking like the real thing.  Regardless who wins, he will have a busy plate trying to fix all the problems in the US.

You said it, Jake. Did anyone notice the way Obama presented his opening statement? That was a future president talking!
The SNL vice president debate was hilarious. The funny thing is that they only need to quote Palin to make her sound like an idiot.

I haven't got the link here, but Matt Damon did a great interview on why Sarah Palin is so scary.
