yes, I mean Chinese Taipei.

In the womens weightlifting competition....the one where China won it's first gold medal.  There was a Chinese Taipei woman who won bronze or silver.  and the flag had a white background, in the middle of the flag were to objects.  The one on top...i couldn't make out...but underneath this was like the 5 rings of the olympic insignia.  ???

Either they couldn't find the flag or they simply made a new one or replaced it with something else.

someone told me that China wanted to call the Taiwanese team "Chung Gwuo Tai Pei" = China Taipei.  But later reverted back to "Chung Wah Tai Pei" = Chinese Taipei.

When Mainland China re-entered the Olympics (in the 70's maybe?) the diplomatic compromise was that Taiwan could no longer call itself "Republic of China".  I don't remember when they had to start using what is called the Olympic Flag, but it is a result of the fact that the IOC, the UN, several other international groups and numerous countries do no officially recognize Taiwan as a country on its own.  Many countries (including its strongest supporter-the US) do not have Embassies and/or Consulates there.

As I look at this more and more, maybe Taiwan snuck-in a flag with their symbols after all, consider:
-The blue star is from the Taiwan flag
-The cloud thing on the outside is actually the highway number marker for freeways in Taiwan--its on all the roads and maps

This was always going to be a very delicate political issue.  I'm pleased that Tiawan was able to at least get some representation and symbolism their for their athletes to look towards.  [but a highway marker for freeways?]

I think the olympic logo is there for a reason too... Maybe to say that this is only an olympic flag, and not a replacement for the national flag.
Otherwise Taiwanese may feel like they are being demoted to Taipei SAR

I think your observations make sense.  It provides a solution without stepping backward.
