T-Mobile global data roaming; free data in 100 countries

QUOTE:
Starting Oct. 31, T-Mobile customers with its Simple Choice plans will be able to send text messages and access data for free in about 100 countries. They can also make calls for 20¢ per minute. T-Mobile says that an AT&T (T) customer who would run up $1,500 for a mix of calls, data use, and texting in Europe would spend only $6.40 on T-Mobile. (While AT&T customers could cut that bill way, way down by signing up for temporary international plans, it would still be much more than T-Mobile’s deal.) T-Mobile is also offering discounted calling and texting from the U.S. to those countries for $10 a month.

This may be the Godsend I've been waiting for, can finally stop fussing with changing sims on my travels. Biggest kink though--may be that Web is locked down to standard speeds of approximately 128Kbps. The carrier you're roaming on can then throttle that even lower if they wish, you just don't know. I wonder if 128 is fast enough for browsing this website quickly, for instance.

EDIT: On second thought, 2G is very slow...too slow for maps in my experience. Damn, there's always something...

I have a TMO unit I take international with me now but never used. I added the service to my plan for $0 so I will see how it works in HK and BKK later this month.  One downside is that Macau isn't in the roaming plan.

I'll end up buying their 2 week 500MB plan to cover me when I hit the non-plan locations.  Also, the 2 week is 3/4G speeds.

Hmm. I took another look, and while I swear I saw Macau a few days ago, it isn't there now (at least, it's there but not as a free country on the International Calling Plan).

Further data:

I have just measured T-Mobile's international data speed here in Hong Kong, in a few places (airport, Kowloon, Central). Speed varied between 110kbps and 170kbps download, and about half that for upload. This is fast enough for a Skype phone call, or a jumpy low-resolution video call. It's great for sending and receiving IM's, we chats, email, and so on. Not so good for viewing photo-rich sites, and very poor for any kind of video.

FWIW, in Taipei, I measured it at about 110kbps down, 60kbps up.

Bottom line: It *is* "free international data", but quite slow. T-Mobile claims there are plans to bring the speed up to 4G levels, but I have not explored that yet.

Jake, it doesn't seem to be there on the new "un-carrier" plans. But maybe if I phone them.

After you log in, go to Plans.  It is under the 3 magenta square boxes.  It says, add data pass.

The normal data plan only covers 500MB up to 4G per telephone line and may literally cut you off once you reach your limit unless you upgrade...

Overall looks like a very good plan.

Looked and seems like they may not cover Macau.

From this weekend, I can confirm that Macau is not covered. HK is covered, but data rates are capped at roughly 100kbps to 150kbps. The actual amount of data is unlimited though (well, at that speed, it's limited to about 30 to 50 Gigabytes per month if you downloaded non-stop, which of course nobody would do at that speed).

Jake - I don't see any way to add extra data. It's clearly showing you something different from what it's showing me after I login. I see plans, and I see data, but neither of them allow me to add any more data to the plan. it seems the new "uncannier" plans are great, but inflexible. Are you on an uncannier plan?

Here it is. I highlighted it.  You must have a post-pay account to purchase the data passes.

Can't believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out. I will certainly give it a try on my next trip. Sorry I missed it, and thanks for going the extra mile!
