Why is the origin of 大姨媽 Da Yi Ma ?

I know that 大姨媽 Da Yi Ma means Menstrual Period but what is the context / origin?

姨媽 = aunt or auntie (specifically your mother's sister in Chinese).

Aunt >> Aunt Flo >> flow >> menstrual flow/period. It's another one of those slang terms borrowed from English.

Holy crap!  I never knew the chinese used a literal translation of the (VERY) slang term "Aunt Flo is visiting" to refer to their period.  

Wonders never cease.....

Edit:  this phrase came about in the Victorian era when it was deemed Very unpolite for women to discuss anything about their bodies at all -- even amongst other women.  Well-bred women simple didnt discuss "periods" or such.  So this was a very polite way to state why a woman couldnt attend a function, or some such.
