Just to expand on what twice said: "one girl in one room" in canto is "Yut Lui Yui Lau."

The chinese character for girl is 女, which looks like a 4, hence 141.

EDIT::: Just read below, this info I got makes waaaaaaaaay less sense!

The correct term is 一樓一鳳, "yi lou yi feng" in Mandarin, translated to "yat lau yat fung" in Cantonese.  Literal translation is "one floor one phoenix", meaning one floor, one girl.  This is a translation back to the olden days when there would be whorehouses where there was a girl available for hire on every floor.

"One Floor One" sounds like "one four one", hence, "141".

You'll also see references to "161" - "lou" in Mandarin sounds somewhat close to the number 6, hence "161".

There was once a popular website, the equivalent to sex141.com, called 1l1f.com

I would think 141 refers to Hong Kong legal code Chapter 200, section 141. This is the statute that creates a loop-hole for "one women brothels" to legally operate in Hong Kong.

From wikipedia. "...This gives rise to the so-called "one-woman brothel" where one woman receives customers in her apartment, which is restricted by Section 141, ..."

As verification, here is a HKU presentation given on Criminology in Hong Kong. Page 13 states, "...According to Hong Kong Legal Code Chapter 200 Section 141 'one women brothels' are completely legal..."   http://soci0067.files.wordpress. ... talksession.ppt#268,13,Prostitution in Hong Kong.   WARNING: don't download this, it is large (4MB), dry, and depressing.

No kidding! So all the other explanations are
just urban myths that have taken on lives of
their own over time?

You sure do learn something new every day!

BTW, egarci06, are you a lawyer or do you
just play one on the Internet?

No lawyer here. Damn, I did sound like one in my post. That's scary!

I had heard about legalized prostitution when I was in Hong Kong last month. I did not have a chance to enjoy the hobby because I did not know how to go about it. This whole thing fascinated me, so when I returned to the states, I did some Internet research. That is how I found this site as well as the references. I will probably be back in HK in June. This time I am prepared!

From wikipe ...

the explanation is purely coincidental.

Cantonese "yat lau yat" (meaning "one floor one") is a shortened form of "yat lau yat fung" (meaning "one floor one phoenix"). However, in Cantonese, "lau" can mean apartment as well as floor, and it's the former that the phrase refers to, relating to the legal business of one single WG working out of one apartment - Having more than one WG in one apartment is illegal, since it would be classed as a brothel.

"Yat lau yat" in Cantonese sounds a bit like "yat luk yat" ("1-6-1"), and hence the name of that other website! "Yat lau yat" crudely translates into English as "one floor one", which of course in English sounds a bit like "1-4-1", and hence the name of this website!

When in Hong Kong, saying "1-6-1" in English has no meaning... Say it in Cantonese though and I reckon most guys will know what you're talking about. Saying "1-4-1" in both English and Cantonese has no meaning, so don't bother!

You know the way Chinese people avoid the number 4 I'm surprised there is a 4 in it at all!.

The last flight into HK was on the 4th and there were bog all Chinese people on board, like my mate who lives in Olympic (he's rich) and lives on the 53rd floor, I said to him.

Thats bloody high, then I remembered there is no 4th floor no 13th floor 14th 24 34 40 44 54 etc.

Life is short very...

And here I am thinking 141 literally means one for one.  As in one performing sexual services for another.

Actually I've also heard the evolved-from-original one-for-one, meaning there's no middle-person, or pimp involved. So one woman for one punter written in a sort of short-hand as 1-4-1. The pimp is the illegal element but in today's environment almost all the WGs here are illegal as they're Mainlanders on visitor's permits who shouldn't be working.
The ladies in the one-woman-brothels must have ID cards and therefor be local residents.
Which sort of takes us back to the original version of one-woman-one-flat.
Can any of you imagine what a sad place this would be if the police suddenly managed to chuck out all the lovely ladies from China! I would die!

To expand on this I say HK law allow WG but no "WG house".  So can have WG business but if only one WG working alone.  You can see other thread here on law, but this is why you need care on having more than 1 girl in room because then may be not legal.  Careful always good!

That specific provision doesn't apply to HGs -- since they're technically illegal, anyway!

So yeah, go for it with a couple of HGs; many have, with generally favourable results.
