The fun might begin soon! Canadian court legalizes brothels (link and video)

Canadian province of Ontario legalizes brothels in landmark ruling

http://edition.cnn.com/2012/03/2 ... brothels/?hpt=hp_t3 (with video)

A Canadian high court has ruled that the province of Ontario (where Toronto is located) can no longer ban brothels.  Toronto is where there's a massive Asian community, so we might see establishments similar to San Francisco's legendary Asian Massage Parlours (AMPs) popping up everywhere.  The San Francisco AMPs, known for its high quality Korean girls, were mostly shut down almost a decade ago.

Since brothels could be legalized soon in Ontario, prices should come down and more ladies will join the industry.  Toronto may be the center of North American mongering.

Of course, if you want Asian providers, going to Asia is best.  But for North American mongers who cannot travel that far, Ontario may be an excellent alternative.

I have my doubts on this. When it becomes legalized, there's gonna be more and more laws and regulations governing working conditions, licences, taxes, accounting, safe work place etc. Take out the pimps, bring in the government to rake in the $$'s instead!!

And then the gals themselves - since they're now legal - heck, they'll be demanding their "rightful" working conditions and pay!
And of course unionization!

Anecdotal evidence of what happened in Australia, Nevada, Holland etc all points to this.

Just IMHO of course

^ Brothel owners can easily go around the problem with labor unions.  They can contract with the girls instead of hiring them.  As such, she's not an employee of the brothel but a contractual service partner.

That's how Las Vegas strip clubs operate.  The dancers aren't employees and do not enjoy collective bargaining rights.  The same for the ladies who work at Nevada brothels.  This is why sex workers (dancers or prostitutes) do not have labor unions in Nevada.

The link below talks about how to be a stripper in Vegas.  Notice dancers need to get a "small business license".

You just know that the government is going to re-legislate.  The interesting thing will be to see how they craft a new law that will not also be struck down.

The constitutional argument was over safety.  Prostitution was never illegal.  Prostitutes hiring staff (drivers, bodyguards, etc) was, and the state, by barring them from protecting themselves, was endangering them.  With this ruling the state now will have to prove 'exploitation' in order to convict.  It will be interesting to see how that will turn out.

One bad outcome of this has been the debate about following the Swedish (I think) model where there is no prosecution for prostitues or their staff.  The clients are prosecuted.

Personally I think it is always bad news when a politically left court win happens during a politically right government.  There is too much risk for the pendulum to swing the other way.

The Ontario legislature can re-legislate all they want.  But if their Supreme Court says brothels are legal, they cannot legislate it away.

Yes, they can make laws that heavily regulates the sex trade.  But anything is better than what you'd have in the United States.  The United States is the only large country outside the Middle East to be so obsessively puritanical about sex.  It'd be nice to have somewhere close where American mongers can indulge in their hobby legally while waiting for their next trip to Asia.

I'm not sure this is a simple left and right issue.  In American, both ends of the political spectrum opposes prostitution.  On the left, you have the feminist activists.  On the right, you have religious crazies.  You have the same in Canada, but to a lesser degree.
