I know which restaurant you're talking about near Rio. If you think that's good, then you have low standards on food! haha.. just joking bro. But seriously, those restaurants you went to are mediocre (IMHO) at best.

For Portuguese food try:

1) Antonio's (Michelin starred restaurant) - in Old Taipa Village (pretty small and discrete. It's located right next to a bar called Old Taipa Tavern)
2) Miramar Bar and Grill - in Coloane (pretty far away but worth the trip - my favorite so far)
3) Fernandoes - in Coloane's Hac Sa Beach. This place is ok and a bit touristy. The food is pretty good but I think the two I mentioned above is better.
4) Nga Tim's - in Coloane village. The food here is OK but the atmosphere is pretty good. I like it for its' prices and the fried calamari is awesome!

For Asian:

1) North - At the Venetian - This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant
2) Tuk Tuk - Thai food. Located in Taipa across from Nam Sun Gardens
3) Thai restaurant at Fisherman's wharf - pretty good but a bit pricier than Tuk Tuk. They do make a pretty mean Pad Thai
4) Thai restaurant near the border - very good food here and cheap! Difficult to find. It's near a MacDonalds near the Macau/China border
5) Beijing Kitchen @ COD - Very good Peking Duck here. Have to order in advance
6) Saigon - Vietnamese food - located in the Nape area next to a DHL.
7) Luk Meen (think it's Kapok Chinese Seafood restaurant in English) - This is a Chinese restaurant and they serve some pretty mean dim sum. It's behind the Altira in Taipa.
8) Japanese restaurant @ Altira - Very good japanese food. I haven't been in a while but last time I was there they had an all you can eat + all you can drink sake thing for MOP600 ++. Great deal.
9) Lua Azul @ Macau Tower - Excellent Chinese restaurant offering really good dim sum.
10) Jockey Japanese Restaurant - Very good and reasonably priced. Located near the Taipa Stadium.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There are literally hundreds of good places to eat though in Macau.

As ruggers says head to fernandos, don't go there is you are in a rush though suckling pig, prawns in clam sauce and the bread are definately worth a go also the house port is very smooth and around 120 for a bottle!

i said it in another thread but i'll let ya know again.  Down the road from Ponte 18 (left if you are at the entrance and facing out), its behind the gas station, local seafood place.  Its not cheap, but its good, esp their crab stir fried with spring onions, that always does the trick for me, typically you can expect to spend around 500 per person from my past several visits.

other than that i don't really know......i have to eat at home........ ....which is not bad if my girl was cooking....her roomies cooking........

Oh there is this little place opposite Oceanus next to the noodle place, that serves shark's fin, its not bad, prices are quite good for what you're getting.....had the 68 thing and it was pretty good value IMO.

I'm what you call the sunken titanic....I can't resurface again.....

The suckling pig at Fernandoes is really good... I prefer the clams at Miramar though.

Also, the Roasted Whole Leg of Lamb is one of the best over at the Miramar but you're going to need at least 4 people (with really big appetites) to finish that.. it's huge..  I have a picture here but can't upload it cause I past my daily limit.. grr...

hello DGS, i think i know which restaurant is in your photo. I actually prefer the one right next to it. It has a more modern decor but similar type of food. I also find that the service there is much faster and food is a bit better (at least to my more westernized palate)

Another good thing about these 2 restaurants is that diagonally across the intersection is Sanado sauna.

one last thing to note about Macau restaurants is that it's now illegal to smoke inside the restaurant. I find this quite annoyign cos I do enjoy a cigarette after a meal. But I'm sure that the smoke free environment is now appreciated by all. From what I know, this law was effective at start of 2012 and the fine is MOP 600.

Recently, I also noticed that Sanado stopped giving free cigarettes. Not that I mind since I never liked the free ones that they had available.

Ah...I finally recall the name of the restaurant that I'm referring to. It's called "Charming" in English. Not sure what the Canto name is. My favorite dish there is the "Canadian Spare Rib Beef Noodles". I'm pretty sure though that the beef ribs are not from Canada. It's a simple dish but hits the spot perfectly every time.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Robuchon Restaurant at the old Lisboa Hotel. It's Michelin star rated and hella expensive. I've eaten there once and spent about USD 300-400 per person on their dinner set menu. Super expensive but really worth it for a once in a life-time experience.

the robuchon has moved to the grand lisboa dome, which has a much better view, not sure if the old one is still here or not.

The best portuguese is the military clube just opposite grand lisboa

In macau, you should try the buffet at the grand lisboa or mgm. only mop300 with large choice of food.

forgot to mention one of the best dishes i like is the chef's spicy chilli chicken at the rio sauna - its not on the free stuff they give you.  the charge is minimal i think HKG$35.  its one of my fav dishes and one of the main benefits of going to rio besides the girls and the facilities

Also, anothing to add is that since Fernandos is so out of the way, getting a taxi back is quite a bitch. The 2 times I went there (weekday nights), my girl and I had to share a cab with random strangers. I do sense that ppl there are cool with sharing cabs with strangers sinec they know how difficult it is to get one.

Hello bruno. It's nearby as compared to the rest of Macau but not really walking distance. Unless you want to walk for about a mile or so from the Westin Macau hotel.
