Has anyone purchased an iphone 4 from the uk, and has had problems using pre paid sim cards in hong kong?
it says on their website it can be used internationally but i've heard there are on going problems specifically with using it abroad.

iPhones in uk tend to be locked to the network it's sold with. So if you buy an iPhone 4 with a vodaphone prepaid sim or contract sim it would only work with a uk vodaphone sim in, unless you jail break it. When they say it can be used internationally I think it just means the sims they are sold with can be used internationally at an extortionate rate. Saying this however yu may be able to buy sim free iPhones but I've never seen these in shops here.

I'm no expert, these are just observations I've made as pretty much every1 I know owns an iPhone.

I heard on another forum that Orange would unlock your phone for a fee, but when I spoke to them about upgrading to an iphone 4 and having it unlocked, the person I spoke to was adamant that they don't do the unlocking, suggesting I take the phone to a 3rd party.

You could try somewhere like Phones4U, who claimed that all the phones they sell are unlocked, but I haven't got round to asking them about the iphone yet.

Same story in the U.S., neither network will sell you a phone and unlock it for use with another sim.

If you buy your iPhone4 in Asia you should be O.K., but you will pay a very high price for the equipment.

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

Correct, they are locked to AT&T but there is such a big on-line community to jailbreak/unlock iPhones that even the most non-computer savvy person can get it done in half a day.  A somewhat computer savvy person can get it done in practically no time.  Or you can always pay those cell phone stores in HK to jailbreak/unlock for you
