Retirement

Has anyone considered retiring in Macau or in HK or near by HK?

I have like 1O years of work before retiring and was thinking about moving back to Asia(china) and living off my retirement checks.

i have considered it.
not just for the sex, but for the food and a great hub to travel to other cities like bangkok, etc.
problem is that it is so damn hot in the summer.

i was looking at the real estates, a flat cost as much as a 1 family house in NYC.
the heat is not a problem, just buy heavy duty AC

but seriously, i might consider moving back to Taishan or move to my wife's home town in Chongqing. not sure yet, but I surely do not want to live in the states when i retire.

There's no doubt that I will be making my way back to the motherland when I retire. There's no way I will retire here in the uk. The lifestyle in Asia suits me, the food, theway of life, the communities. Then there's the sex ;p

Whoa Dere!!

Each one of us have our own unique set of circumstances and preference and rather than considering what is the "concensus" you should concentrate on your own particular set and figure out what is best for YOU.

Things to consider - amongst many others:
1. Money - how much do you have and which place(s) will accomodate your planned lifestyle
2. Medical care - the standards of medical care in China is atrocious and very expensive (for the standard of living there) for anything resembling Western standards of care.
3. Friends and relatives - how much you value such social ties and where best to have such friend/relative network
4. Sex - is this going to be all THAT important as you creep up in age?

And the most important thing - how much do you really/actually know about the place you're planning to retire to? Yeah - holidays are GREAT but they only give you a sampling of the BEST of the places; day-to-day living in the place is a totally different kettle of fish.  You may grow to hate some of the things you THOUGHT you like about the place  - and this is something that I hear time and time again from non-native inhabitants of just about any place I've gone to

Just a little heads up

SEAJ

A couple of my parents friends have recently retired.

Some have retired in Greece!

Although one friend has retired in Thailand, £100K for a Bungalow with 4 bedroom and a Pool! I have been there and it is stunning! I do not know all of the details but I know you cannot own property in Thailand outright, a Thai person has to own a certain percent. I think you have to set up a business and let them have a 5% stake.

You also have to have X amount in your bank account before retiring etc....  My plan is to also retire in Thailand, before I am 45 I do not know where it is he lives, all I know is it is 20 minutes drive to Pattaya!!

Thailand would a great retirement place for single men. A lot of things in your life affect your decision. I would love to retire in Macau or maybe in Thailand or Vietnam. But wife will probably drag me back to Chongqing.

It's true that coming over to another country to retire is different from vacation in that country. I'll be in Macau on the 14th this month for 5 days. Imagine living in Macau? I am going to miss barnes and noble, my fav mag. Book store.  Or assholes on the highway in NYC. Or dumb people fighting on the streets.

I honestly have gave it passing thought about living in HK even though strangely I never lived in HK myself.

not to offend local HKers but there are a few things that is just a huge turnoffs for me:

-unbearable heat
-pollution
-compared to nyc, the people don't seem as friendly
-not family friendly city
-uncertainty about what the communist mainland china will do to HK & Macau

Years ago I hooked up with a bar girl / china girl in japan... Had a fuck friend relationship. No yen payments, just had to buy food for the frig and pay for going out. Lived there for months. I thought living in Japan was cool. But after a few weeks I realized it was boring, all I did was eat sleep fuck catch a flu recover and fuck again.

RICO is planning to emigrate to HK when he retires.....

I have been grafting now for around 18 years and have been my own boss on various ventures for the past 15 years but i recon RICO would be kinda lost if he sold up and liquidised all his assets....

Everybody has a number in their head....Even RICO...

What's yours....

Think I might spend part of the year in Thailand or HK and hire 3 or 4 house girls to cook, clean and fuck all day. Should keep me healthy and happy.

I really do think HK is a family-friendly city. The heat isn't as bad as people say, outside you can shade yourself with clothing, umbrella or just do indoors.

It's very safe, fairly cheap (apart from housing) and many things you can do to spend your time. Respect is given more to older people, which is sadly not the case anymore in Western societies/countries.

Chiang Mai, Thailand, has been getting a lot of publicity for retirement lately. I lived there for a few years and loved it. It is super cheap compared to HK. One of the commenters was right about land and biz ownership, but you can rent for cheap. You could get a nice 2-3 bedroom flat or house for less than $500 USD/month.

Also, since you are married, Chiang Mai is probably more family-friendly than Pattaya or some of the beach resort towns. There are some good restaurants and some things to do, but it isn't as lively as HK, so if you like the hustle & bustle, maybe you should look elsewhere.

Healthcare is not as good as HK, but it is pretty cheap.

I believe they offer a retirement visa, but you have to meet certain requirements, such as a certain amount of money placed in Thai banks for you to live off of.

Sloppy seconds, heh?!?

I plan to semi-retire.  HK sounds nice as it is metropolitan enough but the humidity will probably give me second thoughts.
