Is it safe to take Ipad into china now??

Hey guys, want the lastest update from the bros ...

Going to china soon (very soon)
and want to take my Ipad Xmas gift with me,
but concerned about the customs levy they started slapping on ipad and iphone in November.

Any news about this?  Anyone got burned recently?

I'm a gweilo, and only carrying the one device, so I'm hoping it's not going to be taxed as I arrive in Beijing.  What do you know?

Thanks!!

I presume you're not taking the iPad box? If no, should be fine. I cross the border with multiple Apple devices and never get stopped (touch wood)

Customs are concerned if you are bringing more than a couple of new devices through...

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I'm going to bring my IPAD to my china trip and a seperate SLR camera. No laptop this time (it broke down anyways). The only sucky part is I can't attach pics here for reviews (if I manage to take pics of the WG's) with only the IPAD with me in HK. Might pickup a microsim there and have internet with me at all times.

I go through Shenzhen border with my Ipad and never had a problem. I am sure 1 Ipad without the box will be fine. I also think being a qweilo they wont bother you

And if I recall the news report correctly - they were ONLY cracking down on the Shenzhen and Zhuhai borders and NOT at any other frontier posts.

Reason being that these 2 borders are so easily and cheaply accessible from the outside that it makes it worthwhile for smugglers to try and smuggle stuff in.

Further, from all indications and what I've heard, there does NOT seem to be any problems any more with individuals bringing in these devices even thru SZ/ZH.

BUT - last week I crossed over via Lowu and I DID see the custom officer opening up a guy's luggage and laying out what must have been at least a dozen Iphones on the examination counter; I'm quite certain that this guy will get taxed on these IPhones.

Yes I agree it is mostly the SZ border crossing's I do think that as we get closer to CNY they will be checking more. But I dont think they will bother you with just one unit. I got checked driving through SZ bay and they didn't give my Iphone a second look I didnt have my Ipad at the time.
