China shuts over 60,000 porn websites this year

QUOTE:
China shuts over 60,000 porn websites this year

Dec 30 (Reuters) - China shut down more than 60,000 pornographic websites this year, netting almost 5,000 suspects in the process, a government spokesman said on Thursday, vowing no let-up in its campaign against material deemed obscene.

Beijing has run a highly publicised drive against what officials said was smutty and lewd content overwhelming the country's Internet and cell phones, threatening the emotional health of children.

Critics accuse the Chinese government of deepening the crackdown, launched last December, and tightening overall censorship, and say that the push has netted many sites with politically sensitive or even simply user-generated content.

But Wang Chen, head of the State Council Information Office, or cabinet spokesman's office, said the offensive was vital.

"Our campaign has been a great success and this has not been achieved easily," he told a news conference. "We have made the Internet environment much cleaner than before as there was a lot of pornography available.

"We have changed this situation and this has been well received by many sectors across society," Wang said. "But our campaign has not come to a stop. This will be a long battle."

"As long as there are people with bad motives who want to spread violent or pornographic information, we will have to continue our campaign to resolutely crack down on the spread of such information."

Of the 4,965 suspects, 1,332 people received "criminal punishment" with 58 jailed for five years or more, Wang said.

The government checked the content of 1.79 million websites and deleted 350 million pornographic and lewd articles, pictures and pieces of video footage, he said.

With an estimated 450 million Internet users as of the end of November, China has a bigger online population than any other country. Yet the government worries the Internet could become a dangerous conduit for threatening images and ideas.

China has blocked a number of popular websites and Internet services, including Google's YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and Facebook, as well as Chinese content sharing sites. [ID:nTOE5BF08Z]

The government accused them of carrying content harmful to China's security and in breach of Chinese laws, including images of protests in sensitive regions such as Tibet.

Wang said he had seen media reports that Facebook's chief Mark Zuckerberg had visited China recently, but said Zuckerberg had not met his department, which oversees the Internet in China.

"We saw reports that he met with some well-known figures in China's Internet industry. We are also still trying to learn more about his visit to China," he added.

Google Inc , the world's top Internet search engine, closed its China-based search service in March, two months after it said it would stop censoring search results in response to what it said was a sophisticated cyber attack that it traced to China and increasing limits on freedom of expression.

The dispute was resolved in July after Google changed the way it directs users to an unfiltered search engine. The case prompted a diplomatic row between China and the United States over web freedom. (Reporting by Ben Blanchard, Sabrina Mao and Benjamin Kang Lim; Editing by Robert Birsel)

Starting from the beginning of this year or so, this forum as well as others like ISG etc had all of a sudden become available directly WITHOUT having to go via proxy.

At the time, a few of us here had opined that "something" must be up - and this news story you bring up probably confirms that the reason they all of a sudden loosened up prior blockage of sex websites was to "draw out" actual people and organizations etc from the ISP. With being able to accees sites such as ours directly, more just stopped bothering to go via proxy/VPN - and now the PSB is able to do the trace.

I am actually more concerned with the Chinese side of this site - as they've got tons more posts, pictures and members...all writing in a language easier for the Powers that be to read.

I hope I and others who has the same worries are wrong, but........

yeh i know what you mean, but i doubt they would take any action. i mean both english and chinese are using the same domain name, meaning if the chinese site goes down, the english one will too..

if this site is actually hosted in china, then thats another story.

when they say "China shut down more than 60,000 pornographic websites this year," i think most of the pornography sites are "blocked" and not just shut down.

im sure there are still some pornographic sites that can be still accessed in china.

NO, I don't think that they can shut 141 down as it is NOT hosted in china.

What I worry about are those bros who post FROM China without going thru a VPN/proxy onto our forum.  These guys would write their posts, post up pictures and the PSB can easily trace them via their ISP - and nab them for posting up pornographic content.

I've also noticed of late we've had quite a few bros who signs up on our forum and declare that they are in China somewhere - either when they first sign on or when they introduce themselves on the "introduce yourself" thread.  If there are guys from China signing on to the English side - can you imagine how many would be doing so on the Chinese side?

ok i get you now, but i heard they have blocked the sex141 site completely in china. so i dont think they would be able to access the forum and post unless like you said use a VPN/proxy. i think its best to warn the people in china to avoid accessing the sex141 site even if it could be accessed, just incase.

Yes - I got it straight from Admin here that the DB pages are NOT available in China - and it;s not because of the Great Chinese Firewall, rather, its because the web designers so designed it that whenever anybody tries to access it from there, it would instead automatically go to Hong Kong Nightlife.

I tried it a few times from China and even when I used my VPN/proxy, I can NOT access the DB's.

On the other hand, the threads - our English ones and the Chinese ones ARE available from china - with or without a VPN/proxy these days.

What happens when you're not on the VPN?  Do you get re-directed to Hong Kong nightlife when you try to access the DB pages?

Come to think of it - I would think it would be next to impossible for any programmer to design such a re-direct if one is using a VPN/Proxy as the program would NOT be able to identify that such a request for the DB pixs came from China.  Maybe I was NOT on the VPN when I tried to access the DB pages.

Much I know about computers!!

I do surf the Forum quite often when in China but do not think that LE will actually track you down and arrest you for accessing the 141 Forum, particularly when it is unblocked and mainly pertains to punting in HK. I think they would use their time cracking down on other criminals online.

IMHO one can never be too careful in China.
I'm quite sure Foshan Big Cannon probably would wish he had been .

The posting up of pictures together with salacious reports can easily be considered pronography.
