Now they are for commercial reasons. But 30 yrs ago Asia was a different animal. I visited Chiang Mai in 79 and it was really lovely, went back in 98 and was horrified at what had become of the place. I'm almost afraid to go back to Phuket.
Old timers describe the Bali of the 70's as if it were heaven. When I say even now it's a pretty nice, they throw beer at me!
That actually happened, the old fuck was so disgusted.
I doubt anyplace in the world has changed as radically as Asia has in the last 3 decades.
