BROS WHO PLAY SNOOKER....

RICO has just taken up snooker again after a twenty year break....

I am getting thirty breaks with the club cues and i think RICO could progress to the magic fifty marker if i invested in a personised cue...

What brand of cue would the bros who play this gentleman's game recommend...

Is there really a different between machine spliced cues and hand crafted ones...

there definately is a difference ! - the cost !!!
I bought a hand crafted cue 25 years ago and at that time it cost me HK$800+
and used it without problems until it got nicked earlier this year ... the same cue would cost
$7-8000 now !

I always just use the cues at the snooker club and have made a 50 break on a full-sized, but only get 20 breaks regularly. So, not the best person to ask abt cue types!

Knowing a little about this there are a few suggestions Rico.

Peradon

http://www.peradon.co.uk/

Powerglide

http://www.powerglidecues.co.uk/

Or if you want the best there is you can't beat a John Parris. All the best pro's use him

https://www.parriscues.com/home.html

All of them should be able to send them but the best way is to visit the showroom and see different materials and test different weights / tip sizes.

It's a very personal preference. I like a very small ferrule (9mm or thereabouts) allowing for maximum "action" when cueing but a lot of people prefer a more standard 11-12mm.

Hope it helps bro

If you are maxing out at 30-odd breaks I would suggest getting your own machined cue first.

A lot cheaper and probably more ideal for your skill level. Expensive cues won't do anything for you until you can get to 45+ on a fairly regular basis.

sirtiger: yes, it's popular in Hong Kong, don't expect to see much if any 8-9 ball.

I never took you for a snooker player bro Twice...

Have you bought a new cue yet and how long do you think before you can get used to the new cue...

Why do you think apart from the obvious that hand crafted cues are more expensive...Does a hand crafted cue make you play better...

We must go for a quick game of snooker so that RICO can kick your..errrmm... Sorry when we can have a gentleman's game...

My god...Fifty break with a house cue...

Have you thought about getting a personised cue....If you are knocking in twenties easily with a house cue then i think a personised cue will get you to the magic 100 marker....

Looks as if we have an avid snooker player amongst us....

Thanks for the links bro... But don't you think walking into a snooker club with a personised cue with is inside an auminium case says a lot...The other players in there will assume that you are a semi pro and when they see that you can play...My god the embarrassment....

What is your highest break bro and do you have any tips for a 147 wannabe....

Thanks for the words of wisdom bro.... I think RICO will go to a sports store and pick up a thirty pound cue tomorrow and if i progress then maybe just maybe a personised cue.....

What's your highest break bro and any tips on how to improve.....I rarely go for the black...( Too much pressure..) But usually concentrate on the lower value balls hence coming up and down the table which makes trying to get a high break " VERY HARD"...

96. 40-50 on a fairly regular basis but not consistent enough for me to take it more seriously.

To get a high break you need to pot the black, you can't do it by going for less than blue, which has become fairly common now among the pros.  Nowadays you seequite a few pros playing for blue, although I've never had much success at it.

Personally I think you need to go for the black, as the closer concentration of reds will allow you to set up better.  By always going for lesser value colors you will havea lot of trouble setting up, especially if you are not a pro.  I can't do it either, too many long shots in sequence is very difficult.

Yeah, don't spend too much until you get a little bit more advanced.  Don't be like those skiers with super gear but ski on the bunny slopes.  I used house cues for a long time, until I got tired of trying to find a balanced cue every time I played.  That's the main advantage of owning your own cue, whether handcrafted or machined, it's going to be consistent, so your play should improve.

Hendry used the same machined cue to win most of his championships.  When he got it broken in transit he sucked so bad until he got used to his next cue.

I used to play local competitions a lot from the age of 15-23 handicapped so you had a chance against the players capable of knocking in the 100+ breaks.

My highest is 63 acheived twice, once in competition. The first time I got there was all around the pink spot. I also used to use club cues (or branches as they are sometimes derogatively referred to as). Can sympathise with mark and remember spending some time rolling cues around trying to find a half straight branch. I bow to Markreyes with regards tactics as he obviously plays more than me having hit the magical century.

I stick to 8 ball pool now as having got older the eyesight isnt what it used to be. But play pretty competitively. That's now my forte and can be just as frustrating and satisfying.

Two points:

1) Making the step from 50's to 100's is not going to happen overnight for 99% of people. It's a long struggle with lots of practice to inch up to that magical figure.

2) Where I slightly disagree is that a mediocre player will not see the benefit of a good cue. Whilst I do agree that they shouldn't go out and spend massive amounts having a good reliable cue that you can get used to and trust allows you to improve your game much faster and consistently.

Rico I seriously would guard against buying a cheap ass cue bro. There are very good second hand cues available at some of the higher end manufacturers that are worth a look at at nowhere near the price of new handmade models. One pieces being usually slightly cheaper than 2/3. The advantage of second hand cues is that if they are straight and well balanced they are likely to stay that way and not warp over time.

If you're going into a decent snooker hall you'll find that most people who are serious about improving there game either have their own cue or a cue they return to time and again. Some go to the lengths of marking a house cue they trust so that they can reuse. A bit like re-eating with a decent girl.

That's my two pennys worth anyway

I didn't have the consistency to play in local competitions, nor did I have the time to practice enough to get it up to that level.

I never got a century break, I was close but I choked on an easy shot lol.

I agree that 8 is a good game to play with girls .. although in Manila it's 9 Ball or go home!

I doubt anybody gets from 50 to 100 in a short period of time (short meaning anything less than a year or two).

I guess I should clarify about not buying an expensive cue.  I'm not suggesting he buy a super cheap cue, but he certainly does not need an expensive handcrafted cue at this point.  45-60 GBP is more than enough to last him until he moves up a level.  I think the first cue I owned must have cost 25-30 USD.

96 nearly there tho Mark.

Agreed he probably shouldn't spend huge which was why I suggested the second hand route.

No harm in window shopping at a decent maker though.

Try playing competitive 8 ball and see whether you still think it's a game for girls.

Surely thats 9 ball with the huge pockets

I only got the 96 once, with multiple approaches in the high 80s and low 90s but could never get it down.  Not determined enough I suppose.

I've played in 8 Ball tourneys before, and while not what I call a girl's game, it wasn't exactly too difficult.  Against a 8 ball specialist you will lose though, that's for certain, they have way more practice on this format and can run the table on the break.

The reason why I said it's a good game to play with girls (instead of snooker or 9 Ball) is that it is far easier to explain, less chances to foul, and more satisfying if playing in teams.  Snooker is just a massive pain in the ass to explain to a first timer, and 9 ball can be frustrating like hell for a noob as they will always be put into situations where they will almost certainly foul.

I think that the " BLACK" ball is everyones omen.....Technically speaking if we placed a yellow ball on the black spot...We would be knocking it in no problem....

I did take your advice and bought a Ronnie O'Sullivan cue for thirty quid and it took me a couple of hours before i started knocking in twenties and thirties....

I " NOW" know what you mean by consistent...RICO was turning heads when he was practicing.....My very own cue gave my confidence a big boost and i was whacking every ball into the center of the pockets....

Two days after buying that thirty pound cue....RICO got a hand crafted cue on recommendation from the club pro......

After two hours of practicing with my new cue....RICO wanted to break the fucking thing in half....

Then the club pro saw how frustrated i was and just gave me three pointers which had me knocking in twenties and thirties with ease....

1... Keep your bridge hand six inches from the cue ball...

2... The stance....

3... Stop whacking the ball...Let the cue do the work....
