CAPE TOWN, South Africa  — The taxi drivers hustling around the bars on Long Street in Cape Town say they are ready for all the soccer fans that will flood the city in June for the World Cup. So are hotels, restaurants, breweries and, inevitably, prostitutes.

Arguably, the soccer World Cup is to the sex industry what the holiday season is to candy shops. A temporary surge of excited people feeling collectively festive, willing to pay for a bit of extra indulgence.

South Africa's Drug Central Authority estimates 40,000 sex workers will trickle in for the event from as far as Russia, the Congo and Nigeria to cater to the wide taste spectrum of some 400,000, mostly male, visitors and their apres-soccer needs.

Henry Africa, 49, drives a taxi in Cape Town and, aside from the usual airport pickups and winery tours, he also operates the “Bright Red Tour,” which he expects to be a hit among soccer fans. For the equivalent of 500 dollars, he'll shuttle customers from strip bar to strip bar all night and even bring them over to a safe-sex practicing prostitute, a relevant selling point in a country where one in five adults are estimated to be HIV positive."

Every year here in the US during the Superbowl the same thing happens. When the Superbowl came to my town a few years ago, it was so much fun to go out and watch the talent.

Well, another improvement for economics. Think about how much money WG spend and how many stuff they bought.

But there will be another "dark-age" after, many countries did so.

i guess most of the money comes from the WG's spending not the fans haha
subculture of spending that probably doesn't get properly accounted for =)

Let's do some simple mathematics :

If 1 sex worker could make USD 100 a day x 40,000 workers = USD 4,000,000 / day

Let's say the world cup lasts for 30 days, which means the money spent approx USD 120 million

If these sex workers spent USD 50 a day for food, accomodations, etc to local economy, it means South Africa will get approx USD 60 million fresh money injected to its economy only from cum business during world cup.

Damn....That's a lot of money ....I really love this game

I highly doubt in that part of the world each hooker makes 100USD a day... anybody know the S.A rates? long time, short time?
But good calculation!! That's gonna be hell of a lot of money... not just from sex workers but from the public accomadations/food/entertainments etc.

Read recently that the influx of fans just hasnt happened in South Africa and a lot of the migrants going to the cities hosting the matches hoping to earn money have just not been able to find any money and a lot have been herded to certain parts of the city to try and maintain the countrys image.

with so little goals happened in almost every match, no wonder not so many fans eager to see the match .... maybe we have to blame the Jabulani ball for this LOL

But, compared to previous years the number of goals may be less but the skill and quality of play is as good as ever. Add in the few shock results and this is still driving more than enough ppl to see the matches, why u think fans arent eager?


About the condoms... if all of them are used on sex workers thats 250 customers per worker!!!! I am sure this is an excess supply situtation

I think the game of Portugal 7 - North Korea 0 was part of psy war against North Korea regime. Some guys out there would be happy to see the spirit of North Koreans crushed when their nation saw live match for the first time in their own country. Previously north korea regime only allowed their TV station to air delayed match, not a live match like this.  

Excess supply? Don't worry, they can use it to fight AIDS or maybe they can use it to make children toys using this rubber. It happened once in my country when someone stupid imported USED CONDOMS from europe as recycled material for making toys    ... Damn I never tought that used condom + sperm specimen could be used to make good toys, no wonder country with huge populations like china, which I believe use a lot of condoms, could make a lot of good & cheap toys

No rise in prostitution during FIFA World Cup 2010

Johannesburg, Oct 21 (DPA) Alarmist predictions that tens of thousands of sex workers would descend on South Africa to cater for football fans at this year's World Cup were debunked Thursday by a survey showing there had been no surge in prostitution.
The survey carried out by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Cape Town-based lobby group Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) among 663 sex workers in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, found no major increase in demand during or since the World Cup.

The survey also showed that the proportion of foreign sex workers decreased rather than increased during the tournament.

Before the World Cup, several local and international media outlets had quoted an official from South Africa's Central Drug Authority as saying that up to 40,000 foreign sex workers were expected at the tournament.

'Although our survey revealed a small increase in the number of sex workers advertising online during and shortly after the World Cup, our findings do not provide evidence for the massive increase in supply of sex work around the World Cup, as anticipated by the media,' the researchers said.

The survey also found no evidence of a surge in the trafficking of women and children for sex work - as had also been predicted by some agencies.

Furthermore, contrary to fears in some quarters that the World Cup would aggravate the HIV/AIDS pandemic, 99 percent of the sex workers surveyed said they used condoms - a rate unchanged during the World Cup.

An estimated 5.7 million people in South Africa are HIV-positive, more than any other country. Some analysts have linked the low demand for paid sex by World Cup tourists to their fear of contracting the virus.

Where the pre-tournament reports on trafficking and prostitution succeeded was in spurring local and international donors to make more money available for free condoms and awareness campaigns.

For example, Britain sent 42 million condoms to South Africa for the tournament.

'Yet, none of these investments were based on rigorous research or inquiry and could have been better employed if done in a targeted manner,' according to SWEAT and the UNFPA.

If it all went ahead as initially expected we could have seen an apocalytpic world event with the widespread increase of HIV.

I shudder to think what would happen if one WG in the db contracted it.
