Short term internet in HK???

Lister is finally back in HK! I will be posting about my adventures asap, but I have a quick question for the locals. In all my previous stops I have stayed at hotels that included unlimited free internet access. I am now staying in a hotel in North Point and they are charging me $120/day, which seems just a little pricey.

Now I am only here for a week – does anyone have an easy alternative for short-term prepaid access, or should I just stick to the hotel fee. (Just for laptop – no need for phone, etc..)

Cheers guys, and sorry for being lazy and not using google.

does your notebook have a SIM card slot? if yes, check out 3 Network's HSDPA Broadband Prepaid SIM here: http://www.three.com.hk/website/ ... g&pageid=615001

they also have unlimited data plans for USB modem for HK$168 a month. http://www.three.com.hk/website/ ... 710594&lang=eng

if not, then you need a 3G USB modem, to plug the SIM card you bought above in to. i believe most of the HK carriers will have a package that involves buying the modem and a prepaid data plan, although i believe it will be at least HKD 1,000 and up. which in this case, might make more sense for you to use hotel broadband, although the USB modem will allow you to access internet from anywhere and not just your hotel. useful for when you have to wait 20 minutes before agent calls you back with the rooom number

do you have wi-fi equipped with your laptop? if yes, you may check if there's any pccw hotspot nearby and surf thru wifi, the fee is less than a hundred for one month. furthermore, you may use if for both your laptop and cellphone(though you may not need it).

Thanks for the quick reply guys,

The USB modem would be excellent, but it looks like they'll be a bit pricey. Looks like PCCW is the way to go... (I can go and sit in the phone booth out the front of the hotel and surf 141 there!!! ) Thanks flowy!

i guess maybe you can go to hotel lobby to search for free wifi access too. it should not be too difficult to find free wifi access in HK.

I bought a "3" Modem device (at a 3 shop) for HK$700. I bought a SIM for it for HK$68.

That's all I need now. I recharge it when I come to HK. Unlimited Downloads for HK$28 per day.

Because I am in HK for 2 - 3 days, then China, then back to HK for a day etc, it works well for me.

Don't listen to haroldia. There's been many instances recently of personal data being stolen by those using this free wi-fi. If you want wi-fi, better stick to PCCW. Avoid any unknown free Wi FI access you may pick up on your wi fi connection in the street or in hotel lobbies.

There's a free wifi program in Hong Kong started since 2008 that has free wifi in many public places.  Go to this website and select your city.  It will have the addresses for the free wifi spots:  www.gov.hk/en/theme/wifi/location

Yes sex1 is right, there is an excellent free public wifi net on most of the touristic places.
More in detail there are two networks...  one open and one secure network. When you try to login to the open network,
they tell you that this is not secure (and I suggest you really do not use it... is is sooooo easy to capture the data),
and they give you a username and password for the secure network.
However on both networks the best webpage on the world (you may guess whichone I mean, it ends with *141.com) is blocked.

If you travel a lot and like to use the free wifi you find in lobbies/airport/starbucks/etc, I'd suggest getting a paid VPN. Costs only about $10 a month and all your internet browsing will be kept private from ppl sniffing the wifi networks. Added plus is that the VPN allows you to access this site from China too. You can google up "VPN reviews" and find reliable ones. I've been using my current VPN for about 8 months now and it's not given me any problems.
