Women's group slams 'tacky' bikini race


A women's lobby group says plans to race bikini-clad women down a horse track is "tacky" and "stupid".

The Gold Coast Turf Club's Bikini Track Sprint, being held in December, sees women compete in the new novelty event for the major prize of $5,000.

"Bikini and suitable running shoes are conditions of this competition," the club's website said.

"Competition is open to fillies and mares.

"Celebrate the first weekend of summer with live racing action, music and entertainment - plus a bevy of lovely ladies down the racetrack to win a mountain of cold hard cash!"

A similar event is held at the Hollywood Park race track in the United States each year.

But Eva Cox, chair of the Women's Electoral Lobby and a frequent commentator on social policy, thinks the idea shows blatant stupidity.

"The Gold Coast Turf Club ought to get their heads read and their penises measured," she said.

"They're trying to play up on the sexuality of women and that's just really tacky. It's stupid. It's infantile.

"The plan is degrading for the men who are stupid enough to think of it."

She discourages women from taking part or watching the publicity stunt.

"Any woman who takes part in it is probably driven by the fact that $5,000 can buy a lot of stuff and there's women who need money," she said.

"But this is neither funny nor is it a good lark - it's a real reflection of the Gold Coast. They're (the turf club) obviously doing this to gain publicity, so I hope all the publicity they gain is bad."

Ms Cox says it is not necessary to ban events like this, but the behaviour needs to be looked into.

"Anyone who has any sense should march down the race track and tell these blokes to grow up," she said.

"We really need to look at why a particular group, primarily of men, are stupid enough to find this amusing and why other people might be stupid enough to think that they should watch it.

"People carry on about possibly banning the burka - I mean, you ought to ban blokes who have these stupid ideas about clothing rather than banning the clothing itself."

The ABC has contacted the Gold Coast Turf Club for comment.

Geez, why don't they ban the iron man contest or swimwear section in a beauty contest.
People should just lighten the fuck up.

Yeah, I figure it's one of those values thing people force all the time.  I mean who's going to be a the race track?  It's not like mud wresting where something can come off.

Well, there has been talk of banning swimsuits at a local pool here in Melbourne during certain times.
