Saddle up: world's smallest airline seat unveiled

The world's tiniest airline seat the 'Skyrider'
THINK your economy class seat is cramped? Take a look at a new airline seat forcing passengers to sit at an angle.
Due to be unveiled at a US aircraft show this week, the “Skyrider” claims to increase the number of seats in economy class without sacrificing passenger comfort - creating a whole new type of "cattle class".
However if you thought you were cramped the last time you fly, spare a thought for those who may be squeezed into these seats.
It is estimated that the Skyrider will allow just 23 inches (58 centimetres) of legroom, seven inches (18 centimetres) less than the average seat pitch of around 30 inches (76 centimetres).
The new seats are curved like a saddle and forces passengers to sit at an angle. Part of the passengers' weight will be taken on their legs, which are also tucked under the seat in front.
The seats, designed by Italian aircraft seat design company Aviointeriors, were styled on saddles used by cowboys and will be comfortable for flight of between one to three hours.
“The seat is like a saddle. Cowboys ride eight hours on their horses during the day and still feel comfortable in it,” an Aviointeriors spokesman said.
A partial overlapping of the passengers seating between rows is allowed.
The makers claim several airlines have already expressed an interest in the seats. If an airline decides to go ahead with installing the seats the company would have to apply to aviation authorities for proper certification.
It is likely that passengers would pay less to sit in the seats.
“The Skyrider has been designed and engineered to offer the possibility to even further reduce ticket prices while still maintaining sound profitability.”
Earlier this year controversial Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary said his airline would offer vertical seating. However safety regulators said the vertical seats would not meet safety rules.

I can not see 80% of the US people fitting in a seat like that. What the hell are they thinking?

Have Americans in the U.S. gotten so fat now that 80% couldn't fit?

Personally if the tickets were cheap enough and the plane was flying point to point to my destination, (not some obscure airport that requires a 2 hour bus ride to get where I actually need to be) then I'd be perfectly happy to give them a try on short flights. They're certainly a big improvement on the vertical seats that ryanair was pushing a few months back.

In my observation they have. I go to the US from HK 4 times a year and on my connection flights in the US I see people asking for seat belt extensions on most of the flights

Its not the short flight thats a problem It would be the hour or so delay that you are sitting on the runway waiting to take off.

Have any of you ridden a Horse with a saddle? It is so uncomfortable! I can't imagine that these seats would feel any different. I doubt that I can sit on that for more than 2 hours without my balls hurting....

they've been talking about these seating arrangements for awhile, it just hasn't shown much promise I guess until recently with the picture released by the australians. the US has a different take on it, not the saddle version, they are just planning to make it standing only.

Yes we where discussing the standing seats a few months back
http://forum.sex141.com/eforum/viewthread.php?tid=21512

But if you read the article to the end you'll see that they haven't been able to get them passed the safety regulators, so now they're falling back on this option.

Are any of you guys willing to sit ( perch ) on these seats for cheaper flights?

I mean flights are uncomfortable enough already in economy class, do we really need to make them unbearable?

I would prefer to pay a little bit more for a proper seat.

Really cant see these seats becoming popular.

i am hating this kind of trend to reduce the size of the seats to accomodate more passengers . aeroplane is just different from other means of transport, we often have to sit through a couple of hours to reach the destination

Take a look at the Emerates first class suits on the A380 that would be the way to go.

It used to be a pleasure and a treat to fly years ago, Now its just a headache even though I always travel Buisness international and first class US domestic its still a pain in the neck  I really hope they can improve the industry and planes instead of getting worse like the seats in this thread

I saw the marketing guy for this on the news tonight....when asked about americans, he said that the seats were not designed for americans...and then added that to use these seats, "americans need to lose weight "

by the way, the only way this makes sense is if they turn the "saddle" type seat into a sybian type seat

I never heard of a sybian seat thanks for the link. It may make sense for a women passenger but it wouldn't do it for me

Perhaps the airlines should work towards a total weight cost for flying, say 100 kg per passenger including luggage, after which they need to pay a per kg excess price.

Seats like those above would be a super economy class of say 80 kg total weight after which you have you upgrade to standard economy

those seats are miserable, in china they have bus benches set up at that angle so the less fortunate street sleepers can't sleep on them, not cool, just let the bum sleep on the damn bench at night.

Where the fuck did they get the impression that a saddle was comfortable?

I went horse riding in Mongolia last year and I was saddle sore after a couple of minutes, namely because the horse kept on mashing my balls against the saddle making me wince regularly..

Want to fly crush class?
Check just how tight a flight can get with the new Italian airline seat that has barely any wriggle room.

I've been in worse.... way back I managed to get a cheap flight to Asia except it went the otherway (instead of across Russia it went over Canada), I was seated next to a morbidly obese man who flowed over INTO my seat.... it was horrible.
