Cory Aquino was president due to people power, Fidel Ramos was elected president as extended euphoria from people power, Erap was elected president due to his mass popularity as an actor, Noynoy Aquino was elected president due to his "incorruptible values", but also due to mom and dad. the only one who didnt get elected, and hence, the most unpopular president in recent times, was Gloria Arroyo. she was at the right place at the right time, when Erap got booted out, and she cheated (and admitted on national TV) in the 2004 elections.

Don't worry about safety. There were demonstrations over the weekend about the handling of the incident but there was no violence against any Filipinos except some maid got spat on in a bus. HK is safe, a lot safer than the Philippines.
