"CUDDLE class'' is tipped to become the next big thing in air travel when it launches next month as the class divide on planes continues to narrow.
Some airlines are starting to introduce rows of three economy class seats together that can be converted into a large, flat space suitable for families or couples who want to stretch out next to each other.
Two passengers travelling together will be able to book the third seat in the row for half price.
The seats, known as Skycouches and light-heartedly referred to as "cuddle class'', have been earmarked for launch on some Air New Zealand services from Auckland to LA in November.
Boutique travel agency Travel Associates general manager David Lovelock said the class divide in the sky was narrowing as airlines moved away from the traditional economy-business-first class cabin configuration.
Other options include premium economy, mixed class fares, hybrid first and business class offerings and no frills seats that low cost carriers typically offer.
Low-cost carrier Ryanair has recently outlined a plan to sell vertical seats, in which the passenger stands during their flight.
Virgin Atlantic and Air Canada have also developed hybrid first and business class offerings.
Air Canada offers executive first class, while Virgin Atlantic has an upper class cabin.
"Mixed class fares are also proving popular,'' Mr Lovelock said.
"These fares are great options for travellers taking off to Europe or the UK in particular because they allow you to travel economy class for the shorter part of your journey and to then stretch out in business class for the longer leg of the trip.''

Cuddle Class! Finally the airlines have opened up and allowing more people to join the mile high club!

But anyhow, its a great idea for long trips to the US as I could never fully get comfortable and sleep in the seated position.

Cuddle Class? As yeah mentioned, this would encourage couples in joining the mile high club which is a bad idea as there would be kids around. How would the inflight crew be able to stop the couple from having sex once they initiate it?

Three economy seats together only make up about 5 feet.  You're going to have a lot of feet sticking out into the isles.  They should design something like on trains with stacked beds.

I can just see this!! There's bound to be 2 same sex people opting for such cuddle seats - and whilst not myself being homophobic - can you imagine the stares of disgust and actual vitrol at the sight of 2 guys cuddling up?

I still like my idea of airlines offering "Tubes" 2'x2'x6' stacked 5 or 6 high instead of the present 4 seats in the middle row.

Japan has some hotels where you rent a box that is about 3x3x6.  It has a TV, temp control, and lights.  I guess you get a storage locker outside too.  Not good if you are claustrophobic though.  But I would totally go for that on the overnight US to HK flights.

- except that unlike the Japanese "tube" hotels where the exit/entry is at the bottom of the tube, the opening for such airline sleepers should be on the side to lessen the possible claustrophobia, easy entry'exit AND to lessen the height down as much as possible - perhaps just 2 feet plus thin mattress.

I'm not super tall, 5'9/5'10 ish but on some flights where 3 seats are empty i find my feet sticking out into the isle if i lie down.

Sounds fun but doesnt sound too well engineered.

Yea, i'm pretty tall as well. I think my feet already stick out. I'm not sure how they'll get this to work.
It will be interesting to see them try and pull this off.

Dude, you got it all wrong.  Even though I am quite tall, I will be willing to tolerate a little discomfort and lie down with my head close to the aisle with my eyes facing up so that as the stewardesses (esp. the tall ones) walk by I may get a chance to check out their slim legs or look up their skirts.  It will be really worth it when they step up on the arm rest to close the overhead bins.      I know, I am such a perv.

with all these airplanes getting re-fitted, do they actually recuperate their costs from adding a few extra seats?
it doesn't seem to make much financial sense how they do it, does any one know?

Anything new draws in more customers.  At least in the short term.  Plus it forces other carriers to catch up, so they spend the money too.  Also, upgrades usually save weight as well, which is a major factor in the airline business.

Here is a related example.  In the garment industry, if you can shorten a strap by just one inch, over the 100,000 unit production run, you have saved 8,333 feet of material.  That turns into more profit for you.
