it's one of those questions that can't really be answer. the chicken needed to be hatch from a egg, and the egg needed to come from the chicken. so they both needed to exist from the other to exist, bleh it to early to be messing around with this question... back to sleep!

back when i was at university me and my friends had this discussion for about 3 hours. couldnt even begin to write everything we talked about, suffice to say it bought up more questions fhan answers. for example

define chicken. eg. Is a chicken a chicken if it wasnt born of a chicken egg?

define egg,  eg. If a chicken-like creature laid the first egg, would it techincally be a chicken egg or a like-chicken egg?

etc etc ad nauseum

Neither... the creature inside the egg merely evolved into a 'chicken' and time merely adjusted this creature to adapt and become the chicken we know today

I solved that one way back.  Solution's obvious when you look at it closely.  Here's how:-

Just keep asking the question over and over ... take an egg, any chicken egg, and ask what came before it?  obvious: a chicken.  Now consider THAT chicken, and ask what came before it?  obvious: an egg.  Now consider THAT egg ... etc.  Don't stop.   Keep going.  On, and on, way back, through time and history.

You go back up the chain of evolution.

To the predecessor of chickens, that ran around on land

to amphibians

to reptiles

to fish

to protozoa

to ...

until you come up with simple single-cellular organisms that reproduce by CELL DIVISION, creating an IDENTICAL COPY OF THEMSELVES not by creating an embryonic form or immature form.

And that's the answer.

What came first is the "chickenegg", i.e. a creature that is so simple it is both the chicken AND the egg.

QED

Of course if you're a creationist, the answer's even simpler.

Well lets see...  I had eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner, so obviously the egg came before the chicken. (Today at least)

Based on Darwin's evolution it's concluded that chicken came first

it's a boring question because there is no clear defination for the first "chicken" and "egg".

"What came first, the chicken or the egg?"

The egg came first.
Because "eggs" (irregardless of what the egg would produce) existed way before "chickens" existed through evolution.

Ask a simple question without defining terms ("chicken" "egg"), and you get to use the broadest definition of each term.

But if you're going to ask"What came first, the chicken or the chicken egg", then you might as well take a number and divide by zero....

This one has been solved.  The chicken and the egg were lying in bed after a passionate encounter.  The chicken was smoking a cigarette looking very satisfied and content.  The egg was lying there with a really glum look on its face and looking decidedly unimpressed.  The chicken blows a smoke ring and says 'well, I think we have answered the age old question about which one of us come first'.
