Ryanair plan for standing-room 'vertical seats'

Great now we'll all be able to walk to China with a full bladder.

Ryanair plan for standing-room 'vertical seats'
July 2, 2010 - 10:38AM

Low-cost European carrier Ryanair has announced plans to allow passengers to fly standing up - at a discount.
Chief executive Michael O'Leary will announce proposals today for "vertical seats" along with plans to charge passengers to use the toilet on board planes, according to British media reports.
"We've been looking at is taking out the last 10 rows of seats so we will have 15 rows of seats and the equivalent of 10 rows of standing area," O'Leary told ITV's How To Beat the Budget Airlines program.
The airline plans to offer the standing-room spots on short-haul flights for a cost of about £5 ($A8.90).
Ryanair has repeatedly raised the possibility of charging passengers to use the toilets on flights lasting less than an hour.
"We are aiming at starting safety testing in about 12 months with a view to going into service with the new arrangements in about 18 months to two years' time," a spokesman told The Guardian. "We think this would work well on our winter services so would hope to eventually introduce it for a winter timetable."
However, the newspaper reported that safety officials at the European Aviation Safety Agency said the plan was unlikely to pass the regulator's requirements.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has already rejected Ryanair's controversial plans once, but the airline says it has re-entered talks over its proposals.
Ryanair has dismissed claims it is only seeking publicity and is not serious about the proposals. The airline said the same claims were made two years ago when it announced it would remove its check-in desks from airports. It removed the last of its check-in desks in October last year.

I flew Ryanair once and will never again if there is a reasonable priced alternative.  I found the experience quite awful even compared to other discount airlines in Europe and Asia (Easyjet, Tiger and Air Asia).

What I wonder is if it'll be safe considering people stuck with standing room would rather move up and down the ailse or hang around the back where there's more space. Makes it kind of dangerous with people falling around when there is turbulence. Also what happens if someone gets claustraphobic during the flight? All sorts of problems can happen with that too.

Me too, I mean first and foremost it the safety and comfort of passengers. How would this ever get comfort approval? I saw the pics and tried that position against the wall just now, just seems awkward. Airlines just want to cram in as many people as they possibly can in their planes at low cost.

well, if people can stand on a bus going from Tuen Muen or Sha Tin to Central, why shouldn't they be able to stand for a flight of similar duration? But most likely you need to use your own belt to tie you the "vertical seat".  In case you don't have one you can rent themfor one pound... I doubt that safety officials give green light to that idea

well ryanair is more for discount flights around europe ESPECIALLY for backpackers who are on a tight budget... so most of them probably don't mind standing up for a cheaper price in exchange for comfort.

Imagine it would be like some of those amusement park rides.  Take off wouldn't be too bad, but landing would be strange.  Of course, sitting in some of the rear-facing seats on some of the new UA planes is weird as well.  Also heard they'll be charging to use the toilet!!!!

I have no problem with this at all, so long as I am in the first row behind the seated passengers.  I know exactly where I will be staring when the cute air hostess bends over in front of me to get something from the tray.  Clear down blouse shots.    I might get some goofy looks from the seated passengers though - "look at that cheap arse who won't pay $10 more to sit down! hahahaha".

That wouldn't be very efficient and not easy to climb into, imagine 3 people on top of you climbing up and down to go to the washroom on long flights not to mention risk getting your head bumped.
