Wimbledon - Lu Yen-Hsun stuns Andy Roddick in round of last 16

Unseeded Lu Yen-Hsun from Taiwan  stunned Andy Roddick 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (5-7) 9-7 in the round of the last 16. He's the first Asian to reach the quarter final of a Grand Slam tournament since Japan's Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995.
Lu, who beat Andy Murray at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was understandably delighted and dedicated his victory to his late father, who passed away 10 years ago.
"I am thinking of my family and am really proud of myself," he said. "In that moment of victory I sat and told myself I had done it for my father, for myself and for all the people who have support me". He now faces third seed Novak Djokovic in Wednesday's quarter-finals and added: "I don't know how far I can go but I will fight to the end."

Well, the thought of Michael Chang instantly popped up in my Head as well.

But what about any Mainland Chinese player - there are 3 females in the Top 100 WTA ranking - while the best placed male player is placed on #317 only. What could be the reasons that the female Chinese players are ranked much higher? They just have more talent?

Chang was a great player and fun to watch.  He was not destined to really break in though.  Beating roddick is nice but not really a statement.  Roddick can be erratic so he loses alot.  The test starts now

I think it is because physical strength and power is less of a factor in the female side of the competition.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's true. Its just there are fewer female players that play a power type game IMO. The ones that obviously come to mind are the Williams sisters, Henin. Just fewer power female players as a ratio of all female tennis players, but the ones that do have power are right at the top of the seedings.

Lu was an awesome underdog to root for.

In sports i always root for the underdog especially the ones with huge spreads against them

With federer out it can be more interesting. Love watching him play bit can't win all the time come on.  Saw an article that days it's possible even roger will not be able tohandle the guys who are 6-5 and taller.  The game may really be changing.  Always enjoyed watching women side more than mens. More rallies and strategy instead of brute force

Agreed Men's tennis has lost a lot of its appeal with ability to just pound aces and get points on the serve. All you're really watching is to see who breaks who first in a set, and pretty much can say who's going to win it. Not sure how much of the changes have been a result of just stronger athletes or racquet technology, I would think a but of both.

The men are better athlete and are taller than the past.  Most likely the trend will continue.   If you watch federer matches many of them go to the wire in a tie breaker. He makes sure he holds his serve and often does not break the opponents serve.  So he conserves his energy for his service game and get to the tiebreaker. Then be really focuses on the tiebreaker knowing in arcade that's where he is headed.  It's a simple, little risky, strategy but it has worked.  There is not alot of comments about this trend of his. An analysis of his matches and those that go like this would be very interesting.

I guess I haven't really noticed that, I'll have to keep that in mind when I watch him play next. Which unfortunately won't be a Federer-Nadal final at Wimbledon.

Nadal is known for his ability to get to balls, especially on clay. Just hope to see an entertaining match with some decent rallies.

Well if he beat federer and made his way to the finals, he must be playing well.  he has the height advantage over nadal whio is 6-1.  the opponent is 6-5.  these tall guys are taking over.  With nadal being from spain hes pumped over the world cup, but he always is so expect it to be exciting.

Well the power game of Serena took care of the women's side of things.

We'll see if the power serve game of Berdych can take of Nadal, or if the #1 seed has enough to overcome this.

My money would be on Nadal at this point, if I was a betting man.

I knew I should've made a bet lol.

I'm surprised he won in straights sets, and it appears rather comfortably too.

Nadal is still young, but Feder is aging... it's tough to continuously win matches when everyone else is getting faster and stronger.

Congrats to Nadal.. he is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future, as I think he will be winning a lot more titles.
