Female viagra??

Is female sexual dysfunction real?
June 14, 2010 - 11:12AM
Hotly debated is the idea of the new pink pill, a Viagra for ladies that could always make her 'in the mood', as the US Food and Drug Association (FDA) is scheduled to discuss approving the drug on June 18.
Boehringer Ingelheim, a German pharmaceutical company, is looking for the FDA's stamp of approval to start marketing "flibanserin," a drug that will mess with chemicals in a woman's brain to increase her sexual appetite.
Many health professionals are, according to the Washington Post, calling for the FDA to deny the drug saying it does no good for women by inventing "fake" disorders (hypoactive sexual desire disorder [HSDD]), harmful side effect and can even prolong unhealthy and abusive relationships.

Similar to the drug company Pfizer's blue pill, known as Viagra, flibanserin's "sexual" benefits are secondary. The original R&D was to create an antidepressant, however the papers on current clinical and basic investigation by the scientific body The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists on May 17 include a 24-week long study by Canadian researchers that found "North American premenopausal women with generalised acquired hypoactive sexual desire disorder who received 24 weeks of treatment with flibanserin were more likely to report a meaningful improvement in their condition than women who received placebo." The study was funded by Boehringer Ingelheim.
The "fake" disorder, or HSDD is loosely defined as a when a female has little or no sexual desire and activity over a period of time and it impacts her quality of lifestyle. One concern is that the makers are not sure how it works but think it drops the level of serotonin while increasing dopamine and norepinephrine; so far only slight side effects have been noted by Boehringer Ingelheim's head of clinical research, Michael Sand, including, nausea, dizziness and drowsiness.
Sand claims, "women deserve options and we're hoping flibanserin may represent a safe and effective option for many women." Whereas fierce opponents to the drugs approval argues, Ray Moynihan, an author and lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia, "people think they are sick when they are not. People become patients when they don't need to be." Moynihan's new book Sex, Lies and Pharmaceuticals is slated to be released in October.
Leonore Tiefer, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine said, "women's desire for sexual emancipation is very worthy. I fear that it's being hijacked by a profit-oriented industry that doesn't really try to understand women and their sexuality."
It will be interesting to see what the FDA decides and if the pink pill will be the next big drug trend.

I'm all for equality and if Men can have their Pill, women should too. It could save some marriages. It's a woman's choice whether she chooses to take it or not.

Of course the dysfunction is real.

But (by definition) it's only a "dysfunction" if it's causing a problem.  A woman who doesn't want sex, well, she just doesn't want sex.

There's a therapist, Pat Love (great name for a counsellor!), who did an experiment once getting herself injected with testosterone.  Immediately changed her appetite for sex, until the shot wore off ...

Fact is some women have a higher testosterone level, others have a lower one ... and it changes with age ... and it changes with health and other factors.

I think it's silly to label it as a 'problem' ... but giving girls a choice in how to manage their bodies makes a lot of sense ...

No green light for libido drug boost
June 20, 2010 - 7:49AM

AFP
The pink pill German drug firm Boehringer Ingelheim is trying to market in the United States as a libido-booster for women produced inconclusive results in two clinical trials, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Wednesday.
Originally intended as an anti-depressant, the drug flibanserin - in the form of a pink pill - began being tested years ago as a potential libido aid after women said it failed to fight the blues but did boost their sex drive.
Lack of desire is the most common sexual problem in women aged 30 to 60, just as erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual disorder among men in the same age bracket, researchers said.

Clinical trials to test flibanserin's efficacy in raising the level of sexual desire in women were held in Canada, Europe and the United States.
The results of two US trials with the drug and a placebo were published on the FDA's website: "both failed to demonstrate a statistically significant improvement on the co-primary endpoint of sexual desire", said the FDA.
"Therefore, neither study met the agreed-upon criteria for success in establishing the efficacy of flibanserin for the treatment of HSDD (hypoactive sexual desire disorder)," the administration added.
Besides the inconclusive results, the FDA noted the drug in some patients caused side effects including depression and dizziness.
The FDA said its is waiting for recommendations on the little pink pill from an independent panel of experts due to report on Friday. The administration is not legally bound to comply with the advice, but usually does.
Boehringer Ingelhein has been researching flibanserin as a treatment for post-menopausal HSDD in women since the popular Viagra hit the market for male ED in 1998.
The potential market for a libido booster for women has been estimated by some analysts at around $US2 billion ($A2.32 billion).
Medical research has found that 40 per cent of women suffer from different degrees of HSDD.
Flibanserin belongs to a family of anti-depressants that acts on the body's level of serotonin, a molecule that plays a role in mood changes.

Your referring to pheremones. In some species they play a big part in attracting a mate, but in humans they're only a small part in a mosaic of different stimuli, the most important being sight. You only need read a few reports on the forum to confirm this.

Men : always want to have sex but not always be able to perform
Women : always able to perform  but not always want to have sex

So if the pink pill could really increase women sex desire, it could solve a lot of problem for both men & women, right?
