Really.  Then, it's completely trapping a wife if the husband turns out to be abusive or just out mongering all day.  I think a rule like that is based on a society where the male controls the entire family.  Wonder if they also engaged in planned marriages where the parents choose the husband for the daughter at childhood.  Wouldn't be surprised if that is still practiced.
