Yo Bros, You gotta Gmail Account?

Then you'll want to go into your gmail dashboard and check your web history for both searches AND maps.  Gmail stores all your searches and places you've mapped until you manually tell it to stop doing so.  You'll also have to select all your history and delete it.  Last year I had changed my settings in the Google search bar so that my history was always erased after each search, however it still kept every search I had done PRIOR to that point . . . including the search string, "Hiding Trannie Prostitute Relationships From Senate Confirmation Committee"

Anyway, you may be surfing anonymously now, and clearing your history, but could still have ancient history in your Google dashboard.  I do not know if using the "privacy mode" affects this, as I clear my stuff and log out manually (I was presuming this would be MORE reliable, guess not! )

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

It's in the Google Dashboard.  I think it's www.google.com/dashboard

It's really good because it tells you all the information that you are sharing with Google, and what is private/public.

I didn't even realise that I'd signed up for so many Google services until I looked at that page.  I'm glad that they've made it all accessible in one place.

Looking for traces of 141 in my Google search history... checking... still nothing... oooh, "Purple Rain"... nothing... nope, no traces of 141.

Quick edit:  No fking way!?!?!  Google remembered all my searches from my mobile phone too!  Deleting!  Deleting!   [Prince catches his breath]

I only had one entry in there, something from 10 months ago.  So I'm not sure what the criteria would be for storing my searches.

My history was similar: the only thing stored started about 10 months ago, but then went very far back.  I think I recall reading a story last summer about Google tracking people's surfing histories and so I did something at that time.  I don't recall exactly what I reset, but it clearly stopped the ongoing tracking, it just didn't erase my prior history.

Oh my goodness, I have web history stored from back in 2007. These search results are innocent (heh) but they do take me back a few years. Recent search histories have been more incriminating.

If you use "Bing" to run your searches, they have a column on the left that shows you your search history... best be careful!

Mine does not show any search history either. I think I messed with the settings a while back, maybe around the time TheButler mentioned.

Fuck Google

I never use Google directly. I use Scroggle to access the Google search engine. What Scroogle does is sit between you and Google. It forwards your search requests to Google and returns Google's search results but hides all your identifying info - your IP address, etc. - from Google.

Btw, Google Mail's Web History only records searches if you are both logged in to your Gmail account when searching, and have installed the Google Tool Bar. So don't install the Google Tool Bar.

Here is Scroogle's explanation of what it does: http://scroogle.org/

Here is the actual Scroogle search page which I've added to Firefox's search bar: http://scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm

Here's a Scroogle search bar add-on for Firefox; https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12506

Here is what my browser looks like with Scroogle set as the default search engine:

I think the point is it doesn't matter if you use the private feature of a browser -- as long as you're logged into your Google account, search history is kept on the server side unless you specifically tell Google not to.
