chess

ok, since people are talking about Xiangqi and poker, I'll start one on chess - Western style.

Anyone into this?  Anyplace in HK or SZ to play a serious game, maybe even tournaments?

You would think that HK would have some major strong players but based on the last chess Olympics, there aren't really any good players in HK.  All the good ones in Asia come from the Philippines and China.  Mongolia too.

I used to play chess. I never entered tournaments because I know I'm not that good. The problem with chess is it takes along time to play and think of every move.

yeah the length of games is a real non-selling point.  I was at a big Las Vegas chess tournament over the Chiristmas weekend and the time controls are up to 6 hours per game.  And unfortunately a couple of the games took almost that long.  And unfortunately the pots are nowhere as big as they are in Poker, which is why a lot of the top chess players have migrated onto the Texas Hold'em Poker series nowadays.

Have you ever played poker in Vegas or in Casino setting, JeSun?  I'm seriously thinking about taking it up.  I'm not quite an electrical engineer-type of numbers guy, but I can hold my own.  I can't control my perspiration or facial expressions when I'm nervous though, which might be a problem when bluffing.

Chess is best played by email, or snail mail, where both players have lots of time to think about the game.  Still I've heard of games where they limit the player to 3 seconds per move.  However I'm not into the Bobby Fisher way of playing chess.

The thing about chess for me is, it's hard to find someone at YOUR level.  Mostly people either really suck, and it's like fighting a kid, or they play chess like a super villain and just kick your ass with no mercy.

I would practice for a few months on a website like pokerstars.net before trying to venture into the casinos.  This will give you a good idea on whether you have it or not.  There is a fair amount of skill involved, mainly on quickly figuring out the odds.

Chess blitz is pretty fun to watch actually.  Most blitz tournament games are 5 minutes for each player.  You also have bullet chess, where each player only gets 1 minute.  The best player in the world probably (no such official title) for blitz is American Hikaru Nakamura.  He's pretty obnoxious, especially for a guy who's only 21 years old.  This is a cool video, even involves a bit of trash talking along the way (watch the trash talk carefully, goes by really quick).  The opponent in this match, Varuzhan Akobian, is one of my kid's coaches.

JeSun, I think I'm going to read a book, and open an account online and see if I can pull this poker deal off.  Yeah, those guys in the video should switch from chess to poker and make some serious cash.

yeah Nakamura has always been a cocky bastard.  Back when he was 10 years old, he became the youngest chess master (at that time) of all time.  When asked who was his chess coach, he said that he didn't have any, he didn't want anyone taking credit for his hard work.
